Absolute agreement here from someone who walked to school alone from 5 years old and was never supervised when playing out in the Greater London area.

It takes a great deal of effort to agree with Boris but I feel that in this matter he is totally right. Admittedly, I'm 74, but my view is that the world is a better and safer place than it was during my war-time childhood. I learned to trust strangers, and to believe that most have the care of children in their minds. I feel so sorry for the children attending the scholl at the end of the close where I now live - delivered to the school gate by 4x4, rain or shine. Good luck to the parents of the children in this story - I admire them and their attempts to give the two youngsters the sort of autonomy we enjoyed 70 years ago, when I walked the mile and a half to school on a route which included a park, a lane through fields and a busy main road.

Chuck the parents in jail for life and put the kids in the Workhouse - that's what Boris really meant - it just came out wrong. (We all know it wouldn't be the first time with Mr Johnson ;) )
I agree on this occasion with the Mayor. I also agreed with Anne Widdicombe once - I sometimes wonder about my sanity.
