Nope.. Adam and Eve, came over to Co. Antrim 6000 years ago. There was no soup , primordial or otherwise , that's just godless propaganda . We popped into the ready to wear universe, just a God planned. God then spent ages and ages sticking fossils and bones and things deeper and deeper into the earth in order to confound the proud and magnify the humble. Obviously you down the back were not plating attention!.
And on the Seventh Day
God invented Guiness?

I've long been all for one, combined with zero inheritance allowed, everything left at death going into the state kitty.

A truly equitable society with all starting from the same foundation.
.
I know all about zero inheritance having been born in someone else's air raid shelter, and I'm working on the idea of leaving this world with just as big assets to go back into government coffers.
Shouldn't be too hard...

I put it to you that, on miserable wet afternoons in Armagh, sun dials don't run fast. Or at all.

Maybe their sun dials were calibrated so that we read a century each time there is a visible shadow?
I put it to you that you are unfamiliar with the weather in Armagh!. We have an observatory there, which was so successful that they put up a planetarium , so they might occasionally see stars.
If you want to put it in a place where the sun don't shine.... The triangle of Armagh, Portadown and Craigavon suits.

Or, as with the London Planetarium, it has a domed roof and they project night sky objects on the inside. Keep dry and see the stars/planets.

I heartily agree. The fact that the majority of the electorate vote for a thick corrupt twat like boris (as opposed to Corbyn's vision of redistribution) who will "keep out those immigrants" ("who want our benefits innit?")say something about how well the average Englishman/woman think s/he will do in a meritocracy
Totally agreed, time we removed any incentives to work, all stayed home doing as we wish supported by state..

I have a strong incentive to do something which I believe to be of wide societal value - without payment. Something inside me wants to help others.

Needing to go out to work, especially with significant commuting distances/times, has been a huge inhibitor of doing what I want to do. The past months, I have put in lots and lots of hours developing things that had just been ideas until now.

Good job some of us do. I, ve done my wack now tho.
I, ve done plenty past 12 months... Rebuilt a couple of motorbikes, built 2 windsurf boards, converted a couple of push bikes to pedelecs, rebuilt an old engine (Lister FR3) ready for a barge... Oh and worked on house and campervan a bit.
Don't think socialist nirvana actually works. Remove incentive to work for most and they don't. If folk can live on hand outs... They will. Folk are naturally lazy and greedy. We, ve seen enough examples to know.
Is this the future??

It doesn't work because of the current way of doing things with heavy handed enforcement, people dont like to be ordered about. A system which automatically pays all enough for a basic life will work since almost all people like and want more than that and get bored with doing nothing. Those few who are happy with just the very basic level of life are not a problem and should not be subjected to criticism. Society will still produce all that is needed but will form entirely different social and work structures from those we have at present. A very different world in other words, which can hardly be worse than the one we have already.

Is this the future??
In the longer term maybe, but not yet. We'll persist with the simplicity of permanent magnets as long as we can, which will probably be far longer than the doom mongers forecast. These threats of material shortages invariably fail to materialise as our ingenuity and enterprise find much more or alternatives. I still remember the dire threats of peak oil from the 1950s, but decade by decade it became less and less true. Now we have the stuff everywhere and often can't sell it, don't want to exploit it and don't need so much anyway.

Was that a joke?. The 3 phase induction motor is about 100 years old!. There is no rare earth materials and no contacts. .. just a shaded pole to induce a little lag.
But your other point, yes people are lazy .. It is our most endearing attribute. All human progress has been caused by wanting to do some task while reducing effort.

it may work to a small extent, to set the common denominator for state welfare but can't work on any bigger scale.
Communism tries something similar by giving the state the role of employer of last resort and it hasn't worked. China, Vietnam have to allow state controlled capitalism to boost production.

I don't think they are claiming induction transfer to rotor is anything new but the way it's done ir rather different in the Mahle. I think it's in interests of higher efficiency and high start torque. (slip ring motors do have higher starting torque than pure induction.)
For max torque from zero rpm at moment I don't think Starter motors can be beaten so suspect this is an attempt at replicating that but without magnets???
And 95% efficiency is very high??
Suspect Mahle know just a touch more than us about motors.. (I believe they started as Piston manufacturers?)
Its nearly 50 years since I was studying types of e motors but think the use of dc (via rectifier in rotor?) emulating magnetic field normally produced by magnets is the new bit?? But not sure.. Just seemed an interesting article. Sorry if its upset you Danid.

It is a common denominator for state welfare, but set a little higher. It does work on a larger scale in countries with much higher benefit levels than ours.

And historically it has always universally worked to a large degree. From when we first arrived on this planet we didn't have work or be employed to earn the air we breathed or the water we drank. Even some of our food came easily while there were fewer of us, so there were many basic fundamentals of life provided without work. A universal income is just that translated into our times.

Communism tries something similar by giving the state the role of employer of last resort and it hasn't worked. China, Vietnam have to allow state controlled capitalism to boost production.
Again some thinking outside the box is necessary. Boosting production and therefore increasing consumption is definitely not what we should be doing in our present climate and population situation, quite the opposite, both now and permanently to make our world last.

it's a silly idea, amusing to watch but achieves nothing beneficial.
95% efficiency and max torque at zero rpm???
Looking at torque/efficiency curves seems the Mahle has a much wider range of higher efficiency than all other cheaper motors.
Think they are trying to match rare metal type motors at significantly lower price...??

It's yet to be demonstrated Capitalism works without the greed and aspiration Western civilisation demonstrates. Imagine had cars been purely utilitarian over last 50 years how many people wouldn't have been employed building all that excess we demand.???
Its cumulative. We want 8 speed auto boxes, power steering, Abs brakes, parking sensors, cameras, infotainment centres, heated seats... List is endless. Take it all away and down to absolute basics (a 2CV or Morris Minor) and industry is suddenly 50% its size... Parts suppliers, garages, mechanics and even production workers are all half redundant... With associated knock on effect through society.. Its easy to knock greed and people's aspirations for bigger, better, more, etc etc but it's kept us all fed...

And it's why homo erectus out competed homo neanderthaliensis. It formed larger groups that allowed members to specialise. The toolmaker that didnt have to hunt each day for food. Instead of a meritocracy where all have equal access to education and we develop a specialised tertiary economy we have over "educated" toffs reinventing our economy as a tax haven.

While destroying the planet as an added benefit?
