Hi

Im still scavaging around trying to pick up a bargain ebike(Im kinda enjoying it)Ive got first refusal on a second hand bike. The owner says its got a 15mph option and 20 mph, this is controlled by a red button on the left hand side of the handle bar.On the right is the normal display of three lights, button underneath and throttle. When the button is out apparently its the 20 mph mode. The green button under the lights controls PAS only or PAS with throttle. With the red button out it works fine, start to pedal on PAS mode and the motor kicks in after a few seconds.Push in the green button and after a few seconds of pedalling I could use the throttle too. With the red button in I could only get PAS,when I pushed in the green button to use the throttle ,I turned the throttle and the motor cut out.I tried this several times with the same result.Does any one have any ideas what is causing it?The owner didnt realise as he kept it with the button out all the time.It seems a nice bike even so.

Sounds like the battery might be shot IF:
a) The pedelec only turns on say 80% throttle (like my 2007 Wisper does).
b) You turned the throttle to 100%

Basically my theory is that 100% throttle is too much for the battery and the load causes it to dip the voltage below the low voltage cut out.

As torrent99 says, the battery is the most likely cause, particularly if it's a lithium type.

If not that, it could be a poor connection in that throttle path within the controller or even a faulty component in there.

Either way you should be wary, since replacement lithium batteries are expensive, and if the problem is elsewhere, it could prove very difficult to sort out.

Ok guys thanks for the replies. In both scenarios would this happen if the bike ran perfectly at the higher speed mode setting?

If it's the battery, it would happen as well in high speed with full throttle mode.

So its not the battery? It could be the controller? Are these easy to replace and what sort of cost are they?Thats if theyre compatible I guess??

thanks!

I don't know what bike we are speaking of where controller compatibility is concerned, but with the control facilities you've mentioned the original type would be preferable. That's the most likely cause now, but there may be other possibilities depending on the e-bike and setup.
