Hi all.

I need to buy a cassette removable chain and get my 8 speed cassette off. I need to swap rear wheel for one with with disc mount.

Going to cost me £7 to £15 depending on the tool I buy. Worth the effort or am I just wasting my time?
Could just buy new wheel and 8 speed cassette?

Thanks

New wheel and cassette will cost a lot more.

More than one question there!

Most cassettes are compatible with the Shimano splined tool. To hold the cassette whilst undoing the splined retaining ring, I make my own long levered tool from a three foot batten of wood, an old chain and a couple of wood screws driven through the chain into the wood. Then the splined tool on a long socket set Tommy bar. Crude but effective.

Use the splined tool in a vice and turn the wheel by hand to tighten up the new cassette, or a torque wrench if you want to be precise.

The wheel hub has the disc mount, so if yours doesn't, you'll need a new hub or wheel, so no need to remove the cassette if it is being replaced anyway.

Once you've spent your small sum of money on the tool: £4.49, might be posted from China regardless of what the listing says. All other chain whips look much better quality than this one...

... this for slightly more money is better, because it's handle can fit easier into a pipe....

...use over and over it till it breaks. Mine broke, bought a T-Rex, haven't used it yet. Supposed to risk cassette teeth less.

The old tool still works, after chain repair. Chain shattered and tool warped by unimaginably powerful forces exerted by my massive beefy arms. And they're getting bigger.

You can use an old chain and a screwdriver rather than a chain-whip tool. You still need the cassette removal tool for the locking ring.
