I counted 20 2A cells - 144WH.
There have been other examples of combining battery, controller and motor before, none met with much enthusiasm.
The idea is not very good, your wheel is a constant source of vibrations - subjecting batteries to vibration is stupid. The inertia of the electrodes and electrolyte will create stationary waves inside the batteries (like ocean waves) on top of G force, They will destroy the battery assembly prematurely.
I think it appeals to the couch potatoes. What else can you put in remote controls or smart phones?

Definitely a great idea, would be a much easier way to sell kits compare to all the hassle currently involved. Chain tension on former derailleur end bikes would need some thought though.

that is over simplified.
Where are the brake sensors? what happens if you mobile phone falls off the bike? how can you prove that you are pedalling (required by EN15194)?

Often it is how well ideas are implemented. Look at Microsoft and Apple. The former developed tablet technology before Apple but we all now what the outcome was. There are several interesting motor developments forthcoming including motors integrated into the shaft. The only way I have found to really tell is to try them out. It would be great to see more competition at the premium end of the market, it can only ensure everyone benefits.

Works out an expensive kit and you end up with a singlespeed bike. That's going to make it a niche market ... as obtrusive as a Magicpie and battery in wheel sounds like a recipe for dead ducks. Might work in Manhattan tho' ... for a few days in any event. Novelty toy at best but the cellphone tech is a decent idea - if it keeps working as phones evolve.

For me, the use of a smart phone is a huge NO.
Obviously the wheel is only meant to last a few years in an over paid city environment,
I have just had to buy a new laptop and am struggling with Windows 8.
At a club Christmas dinner today, a business man was bewailing the fact that support for XP is soon to finish.
My money is that the wheel will be obsoleted by developments in mobile phones.
Also, just how rain proof is a smartphone?
