Hi,

Im new here and wanting to do a project. I have a Carrera Subway from Halfords, about 5 years old. I Would like to convert it to an electric moped with a 2000 to 3000w motor. I know it has to have lights, horn, number plate etc and registered with DVLA and MOT'd.

Does anyone know any reasons why this can't be done with a Subway Carrera?

Many thanks,

Trevor

i doubt the rear triangle could handle that much power even if it did fit and would prob twist and snap the frame.

if you want that much power then one of these would be better to build up a hi powerd emotor bike on.

The cost and hassle won't be worth the effort. Next you will find insuring it will cost 'HOW MUCH' and more expensive then a 1000cc motor bike.

Thanks for the replies, you have successfully talked me out of it.

Another question then. Cycletricity do dual powered kits 250/500w so you can switch between the power modes. if you are using 250w on the road, is that then legal?

If you as the rider can switch it while riding, then it is definitely illegal at all times.

The DfT made this very clear back in April 2013.

Would a 1000w motor be suitable for a Carrera Subway bike?

Thanks. What about a thumb throttle (not a grip throttle) is that legal? (as well as having pedal assist).
Not unless is has msva approval, then it becomes an Lpm /moped that has the same right as a pedelec.

Why does every one come on here and want an illegal moped, any 250w pedelec will be as good as a moped you talk of if use din high power mode. It will out put approx 400 - 600w of powerand some like bosh & yam output 700 - 800w.

Just because it says 1000w doesn't mean it will be better.
Often most grizzle about lack of range because they are sold a battery that is able to supply enough power for a long duration.
Most think they van get away with the cheap kits simply on price vs a more expensive legal kit that is far more capable.

It's the Bafang 1000W HD converters who ask about making it legal and rapidly giving up that gets me... I mean, that sort of research should be done BEFORE ones buys a kit! It would be wonderful if there was a website called "Try-my-250W-bike-conversion-cos-you-really-don't-need-a-1000W.com" - a nationwide scheme where prospective buyers of ebikes could leave the value of the bike in cash as security, and try other people's bikes for a few hours.

Most don't see beyond the lure of big numbers. A 3L engine is more powerful than a 1.6L engine, right? Tell that to anyone who's driven an F1 car !
Couldn't we have a banner header? Something like, 'Any pedelec motor labelled above 250W is illegal under any circumstances'.

As said people see 1000w and then think it has to be 4 X better then 250w and simply don't understand the rating, likewise they also don't understand the current required and the battery specs to supply the current asked for.

I can understand the logic of so called 'legal' by adhering to the max speed limit to gain the extra power for climbing as you say it is still a 1000w motor outputting some nominal 1300/1400w.

Just for clarity, I never came on here wanting to make an illegal moped, I think I made that quite clear when I mentioned DVLA, MOT's etc. I would not own or drive anything illegal not because I fear getting caught but because I don't like breaking the law as a matter of conscience.

Yes you were clear and one of the few who post of going the MSVA route, my response wasn't aimed at you but in response to guerney and Ben regarding the 1000w & BBSHD mentioned. Most think that the simple restriction to 25km/h makes them legal and can by pass the set out reg's for epac's.

This being the internet, it's not just an EU or UK site so we have members around the world and a separate forum to cater for that, so we couldn't have that banner in the site home page:

Speed Pedelecs General Discussion
Discussions concerning speed pedelecs, motor propulsion beyond 15mph or maximum power outputs above 250w, or e-bikes being used in other countries.

Trouble is people dont spot this and post queries on over rated ebikes in the main electric bike forum.
