I want to get a used Jaguar probably in the years of 2004-2007 with around 30-70k miles on it. Cost will be around 10-17 thousand. It will probably be the type X. Do any of you own a jaguar or used to have one? I have some questions about them. Are they reliable cars, as in do the parts break often and you need to go repair it? How often? Do they consume a lot of gas? How many miles do you think they last? Do the older or newer ones work better? Are they expensive to repair? I've heard from people that they are not reliable and you need to repair them often so i'm wondering if any of you guys own a jaguar and what your experience is/was with it.

I don't own one Heather, but in case you don't know Jaguar X-type is based upon the Ford Mondeo, the first Jaguar designed in the period when Ford owned Jaguar.

It's based on a modified Mondeo floorpan. The rear suspension is from the Mondeo estate, the engine is derived from the Mondeo's V6, and the gearbox is from the corporate parts bin.

Whether you consider that good or bad is up to you, but clearly there will be some parts compatibility.

I have a friend who owned one for a while who considered it greedy on fuel and now runs a BMW, but thats all I know about ownership.

Petrol ones are juicy, diesel ones surprisingly frugal. 2.2 better as more power and will really take the mileage if looked after, I know of a regular use one that has covered 250,000 miles now and still going well. Reliability of the Mondeo - which is pretty good to be fair. They are also a very nice place to be as well, with a very Jaguar feel to them.

Good mileage-eater, at that budget you should get a good one. Make sure it has full history and been looked after. Owners that get a good one love them. Larger engine petrol 4x4 is often cited as the best, which maybe true as long as someone else is paying the fuel bill!

Avoid any with automatic gearboxes unless you can find a low mileage one and don't plan to do many miles.

That's a lot of money to pay for an X type that's over 12 years old. Jag's generally get poor scores for reliability from Which?
