My friends at Alhaurin El Grande have had there irrigation water turned off and large underground pipes put in for each Campo property and the town hall want to charge €360 a year for the privilege and then charge for the water on top of that!!.To which he told them to stuff it cause it's cheaper to water it by hosepipe. The water from any pipe leaks just goes back down though the permeable chalk into the aquifer again, so all that's lost is a little pumping effort, but no water has gone.
I thought that it took thousands of years for surface water to filter through the chalk?

Apparently not, according to Thames Water, and the rate at who it soaks away in the North Downs supports that. That well by the way isn't very deep and the water table fluctuates around 6 metres down, so not too far for the water to reach. In any event, the water isn't lost as it's sometimes put by those speaking of leaks, it merely rejoins the cycle of supply.

Of course that is supported also by their wanting rain now to relieve this year,s shortage
