Bicycle Sales 2011: e-bike plust by 9 percent, Internet sales fall sharply

Saturday, May 5, 2012

DOETINCHEM - The market for new bikes in 2011 declined by 1.4 percent over the previous year. The turnover on the Dutch bike market was fairly stable: - 0.6 percent. Remarkably, the sales of bicycles via the Internet was a big blow: it fell by nearly a third. That is apparent from an analysis of BOVAG and RAI -based Gfk survey of stores and consumers.

There were 2011 in the Netherlands sold 1.198 million new bicycles. In 2010 the figure was 1.215 million. This is a decrease of 1.4 percent. Thanks to the higher average price of a new bicycle sales declined only slightly, by 0.6 percent.

Market share of 15.1 percent for e-bike
The higher average price of a new bike is accounted for by the e-bike. There were 181,000 electric bikes sold last year, against 166,000 in 2010. The e-bike, making it now accounts for a market share of 15.1 percent. More than half of the new bike is still in the 'city bike', but this category must have a spring show: the number of city bikes sold decreased by 2.7 percent.

Sacha Boedijn, secretary of the RAI Association Division Cycling: "It is nice that the e-bike continues its march. And also explainable. First, the diversity of the range still, so the e-bike for more groups of buyers an attractive option. Think of commuters, mothers with children and the like. On the other hand, the product alive. The modern e-bike is in many ways the personal preferences of the rider to adjust. This allows you as cyclists choose what support you want. If you opt for a sporty ride or a support tour with a character. "

Internet sales decreased by 28 percent
Remarkably, the number of bicycles through the internet was sold in 2011 declined sharply. From 129,000 in 2010 to 93,000 copies in 2011, a decrease of less than 28.0 percent. The market share of internet in the new bike sales dropped thus from 10.6 to 7.8 percent.

Niels Hansen, manager BOVAG Bike Companies: "We think in these times of uncertainty, a growing group of people choose to purchase from authorized dealers, a bike company with a good workshop. A place where you as a bicycle buyer can go back if you have a question or a problem. A place also where you get expert advice and a custom bike, instead of a do-it-yourself package on the gamble. Best Niels Hansen, here are opportunities for Bovag, as you are now widespread in the media after bring out the bicycle Internet sales decreased by 28 percent.

Newspaper articles, television, posters for bicycle where the headlines insist that Internet sales decreased 28% etc..

The internet sales is as much as 28%, the consumer is now about 3 times as often with the story that the bike is much cheaper on the internet etc etc. usually even only by mail and you like bike shop not even 1 on 1 what our value (if it does so by mail)

@ John,
If consumers about 3 times as often with the story that the bike on the internet is much cheaper and a bike shop can not even tell what its value is you can only conclude that the average bike shop in this price war lasts and the Internet price of a bike has been completely erodes.
Koos @ 07/05/2012 11:02
@ Chose something better read, I said that often the customer by e-mail informs you that it is not clear 1 to 1 can tell (if the customer in the store is different and it is easier)
john @ 07/05/2012 11:44
Because many bicycle shop in this price war is likely to come as the cause is known that less is sold over the Internet ..
john @ 07/05/2012 11:46

@ John,
What are you trying to achieve then? You put not just the internet sales in a negative light but is also the entire industry. Also want to piggyback on what actions a Bovag should go up? Pride on the bicycle industry that is not with the times like shopping online? I find it more something to be ashamed of.

What is your added value compared to the competition whether offline or online? @ Chose a
You can indicate that you can specify by mail. Every entrepreneur must be a customer can get the added value of his case and why you should buy and where to gain the occupants? Service is important and that is salable. Lowest price anyone can give, it is precisely the art of business to maximize efficiency to generate and provide continuity to the entire industry and your own customers. If only the price is even lower than the prices will be if everyone goes down and then you are again responsible for the fall. As a result, you are so low the price is that you can no longer provide service. Many major online players use a tight pricing policy and make prices transparent, there are only small parties that difficult. This is not only the price but also service. It is the responsibility of the suppliers to these parties to keep out. Our suppliers deliver because everybody and everything .... And the trade is partly responsible for the fall because they go along. Professionalise your own business and distinguish you from the competition whether online, offline or a combination of both.

Where can you find in practice to get on the internet:

• Trade is not possible
• Shipping / delivery costs are at least € 30, =
• A morning or afternoon at home when the bike become concerned
• Is there anything wrong with your bike, it might be damaged during transport or there is a technical fault, then Ude bike back to you. The shipping in this case for you. (The cost of return shipping will be at least € 30, =)
• You can return the bike itself but this will cost you probably spare time, not talking on fuel costs. If the bike can be repaired immediately then maybe you wait an hour. What sense would have you there if you can not wait and you must leave the bike there? You can ride the bicycle at a later time or retrieve the bike with the necessary costs to send back.
• If you choose to bike to have someone come over you again one morning or afternoon at home. Exact delivery times can not provide transport.

Terminations:

• You must install the pedals, saddle and handlebars at the right height put
• The packaging material remains with you behind (large cardboard box of 2.00x1.30 m)
• From our experience in the workplace, we see that the way the bike ready made is often unsatisfactory with the result that you return the bike back to whether you should send him back with the necessary costs. Or you can go to the local bicycle shop to the problem paid to solve
• Manufacturer's warranty will lapse once the parts are not properly fitted!
• We act no warranty cases on bikes purchased on the Internet, you must then turn to the internet

Link not working, but I similar to this some while ago in a Bike Europe report. E-bikes had reached 1 in 8 of all bike sales. In fact overall bike sales were down there numerically, but the much higher cost of e-bikes meant the value of their whole bicycle market had increased. They're not alone though, overall bike sales are down in the UK and France as well.
