As always Farage is strong on rhetoric but weak on detail, just cant understand why others are not challenging him.
Ronald Reagan once said: 'if you are explaining, you are losing' (or when you are explaining, you are losing).
voters aren't interested in those who try to explain because that implies they don't understand the argument.

WTO would be best for us, surely?
Chinese bikes are taxed the same as German bikes!
Now that's a thought!

Not if you are setting up in Portugal where Government incentives to open a bike factory/warehouse are enormous. We would like to be able to sell bikes to Europe, being based in "little" Britain unfortunately just wont work.

Surely it makes sense to belong to the huge trading block right on our doorstep?

I am looking forward to trying it out, have you sent anything on the train yet?

We have to consider that from Portugal we can deliver to any shop in Europe in 2 days, including shops in the UK, and by some weird set of circumstances, we can deliver from Portugal to London cheaper than from Sevenoaks to London, go figure!!

All the best, David

Back onto thread, some interesting news today.

LEVA EU have just informed it's members that an application has been made before the General Court of the European Union aimed at the annulment of the Commission’s Regulations imposing anti-dumping and countervailing duties on electric bicycles from China.

Many thanks to Annick and LEVA - EU for diligently working away in the background, real latter day Robin Hoods!

If you are an importer of bikes OR PARTS from China and haven't joined LEVA yet, there is no time like the present!

All the best, David

The detail...

Giant has introduced an application before the General Court of the European Union aimed at the annulment of the Commission’s Regulations imposing anti-dumping and countervailing duties on electric bicycles from China.
The pleas against the duties is based on four arguments:
  • The Commission concluded that the aluminium raw material purchased by Giant was subject to state interference and did not reflect market values. Giant claims that this is a manifest error of assessment.
  • The Commission has made a manifest error in the method used to determine that Giant was subject to significant distortions.
  • The Commission infringed the Basic Regulation by failing to carry out a fair comparison by not adjusting normal value for the differences in level of trade between export prices and normal value and by not providing Giant with the necessary information to quantify its adjustment claim.
  • The Commission infringed the Basic Regulation by failing to compare prices at the same level of trade and at the point where the goods enter into competition with each other.
The Court now has to decide on the admissibility of the plea. Should the court allow the plea, other parties, who believe that they have grounds to call for the annulment of the Commission’s Regulation, could join the case as intervenors. A decision in favour of the plaintiff(s) would force the Commission to immediately stop the anti-dumping and countervailing measures. Furthermore, the annulment of the Regulation would mean that all duties have been collected unlawfully and would therefore have to be paid back by the Commission.
LEVA-EU is currently consulting with its members and its lawyers to determine a position in this case.
The plea against the anti-dumping Regulation is here, against the anti-subsidy Regulation here.

As Bobo has recvd offer from a Chinese company to build HS2 much faster and cheaper, will each train be subject to anti-dumping tax, or will they be WTO level, haha :) ?

Interesting, I think Giant has assembly plants in Hungary, Netherlands and possibly Poland in the EU. I seem to remember in the past I read something that Giant were subsidising the entry level price of their Contend model because they felt it was important to be available at that price point. The bike in question was the Claris equipped model which was sub 10kg for the medium sized frame and had a fantastic spec for its time and price, maybe 2018? They were worried about not being an option as an entry level road bike so the price was trimmed to compete with lower spec models. It was a great deal while it lasted. Back then the RRP was about £549 and discounted to £399 end of season but now the bike is up close to £800 I think, luck to get for £599 end of season a 50% increase in price.
