The public points tend to be high power ones aimed at a quick top up.
Hence they are found in supermarket/shopping centre car parks and increasingly, motorway service areas.
The idea is to charge for an hour or so, thus you wouldn't expect to see an electric car camped out on one all day.
It would be a fiasco if they were all always occupied.
The fact most show on the map as available demonstrates the system is working well, not poorly.

The market for electric cars is in its very early stages in the UK.
No one would buy one if they looked at the map and there were only a handful of charging points, none of which were ever free.
Inevitably, the infrastructure must lead the way, so it will look under-used to start with.

The problem is that the e-cars are not going to arrive to use all this infrastructure.
Technologically and economically they are a dead duck, as politicians are now beginning to realise. They should have sought the right impartial advice first instead of consulting the wishful thinkers.

The take-up of e-cars remains to be seen.
There are plenty of barriers, although the charging point one looks more or less solved.
High purchase price - even with a £5K grant - is a problem, but prices are coming down.
There's a small Renault which is 'only' £14K.
Battery life is not a problem if you take up the lease plan.
Range of about 70 miles is plenty for most users, most of the time.
After all, you don't need a full tank of fuel just to go to work or the shops.
Cost of charging is another consideration.
A full charge is around £3, not insignificant for 70-80 miles of motoring when compared to a small diesel doing 50mpg.
Nobody has mentioned about charging your Electric Vehicle in the myriad of streets with Terraced Houses in this Country . The Vandals will have a field day with wires all over the place .

Exactly why the take up of E-cars will be minimal. They are just toys for rich boys who will park and charge them in their garages, whilst using the BeeEm for everyday motoring!
I live in a terraced house, and like thousands of such properties in the North East, it has an enclosed rear yard big enough for several cars.
Someone will mention flats in a minute....
Hang on I have a car and 2 bikes and live in the UK's 2nd cycling city. The car's for the wife but I can't my golf clubs to the course on my E-bike!
