Belt drive is a lot less efficient than chain drive John, but not as much as that amount of gearing up. You'll be ok on the flat of course, enjoying much higher speeds, but it may compromise the hill climbing by gearing up too much whatever low gears you have.

11/1 belt changed to 8/1 chain is about the limit of any gain you could expect without severe effect.

Hi Flecc. Thanks for the info,it`s not about any gain.they stoped making this Trike now so can`t get any more belts,so i have to convert it. i have 3 ratio to chose from, 4.2, 3.4, 3.1.don`t go up many hills.which ratio do you think would be best.John

Definitely 4.2 John, probably as much as it could stand. Hope it works well with that high gearing, plenty of speed if it does. :)
