Hi Mark, didn't you take the string ray? Now, that would have turned some heads.
Nice video and photos - thanks.

Hi Alan,

The stingray is only a personal project- rather than a company project :) We have it working properly now though and are going to tidy up the wiring. Are in the process of converting the other cruiser! We are also customising a Metro Gen 2 which will be on show at the Cycle show....is looking very cool!!!

Yes, of course, none the less people love customization. So long as you are using UM parts am sure if you had a booth dedicated to customization at next years event it would be a big success ... otherwise you will miss out on the HUGE self build market ;)
btw - do you know anyone who makes Disc Rotors? I want a special one-off made.

Hi Alan,

I don't I'm afraid! Would be interested to hear if you come across anyone.

Thanks
Mark

Thanks for the pix, very interesting.

It makes me sad that all we British can do is assemble from imported components or sell. We seem incapable of original design or manufacture in the electric bike field.

At least we have Brompton in the folding bike market. Ironic, in folding bikes we make a world beater - in electric bikes, nothing.

Still, on the bright side, we have the best barrow boys -sorry -bankers, in the world :D

As in so many other fields like cars and hovercraft, we were in very early but in most cases failed to develop the early advantages.

We had our own e-bike designs in th 1980s and 1990s, one of them, the venerable TGA-Electrobike lasting until 2009 before discontinuation after virtually no upgrading in all those years.

To illustrate the early British advantage and how others develop much better than we do, how many know that the first Nissan car ever was the 1929 Austin 7 built under licence and called a Datsun? And it will surprise some to know that the first BMW car ever was the 1931 Austin 7, also built under licence. Despite that late start, within 7 years BMW were designing cars like this Type 328:

Hi Lemmy,

No problems.

We are a UK company that develop our own technology- however our design and engineering team are based in Germany.....!

You obviously have good reasons for your design and engineering being in Germany, Mark. I'd be interested to know why that would be.

On the face of it we have constantly improving educational standards, more and more graduates and yet companies need to look to Europe and Asia to get their work done.
As Flecc's fascinating post illustrates, the ability is in us but something is missing somewhere. (where do you glean all this stuff, Flecc?)

From personal knowledge, observing my brother who has a small and specialized business in Kent. He pays well but his last 2 employees taken on are Polish. He has had terrible troubles with English youngsters just not showing up or turning up when they feel like it. But mainly, the Poles are numerate and can easily be trained in the maths required for the job. He simply doesn't have the time or inclination to train people in basic maths. And I do mean basic, simple long division, decimal calculations, stuff like that. These are people with, on paper, good educational qualifications, one of them with a degree, in fact.

Hi Lemmy,

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the design and engineering done in the UK. But our head designer, Norbert Haller, who is ex.Mercedes is based in Germany and we built the team around him.

I know the UK has the skill base for a lot of products, I have friends who have designed and built this in the UK: 3 wheel trike low carbon vehicle EcoSpinLtd Home Page and other good friends who have built this: German Auto Spares/ Turner Race Developments Electric VW Polo | www.eco-rally.org. So it is possible.....

However we have been through a couple of Technical Assistants in our UK operation, who as you say would just not turn up! Our current Technical Assistant is more mature and seems to be able to get up in the morning!

I meant nothing in the way of criticism. Business is business!

I used to work with many Germans who moved to this country on behalf of their companies. They came to the UK thinking we were like them but left thinking we were actually like more like the Italians.

Nothing wrong with that in essence, just a surprise for them.
