I had that on my Torq briefly a long while back. The manual suggests the hall sensor in the motor is faulty - in my case it turned out to be a bit of water in the contoller. 20 mins with a hair dryer solved it.

I hope yours is as easy.

Cheers,

Django

If its like the Torq, then 8 means hall sensor on motor faulty.
But before you panic, two things.

I found it difficult to count the flashes - are you sure its not 7 or 9?

Have you got it damp? I had this once, and it fixed itself when it dried out.

Well there you go. Looks like Django and I were typing simultaneously. Where are you on holiday?

This is from Fleccs site.
I dont no if its the same for the liv.

Fault Diagnosis

Self diagnostic system, Torq and Quando (Edited revision of manual entry)

The controller is programmed with a self diagnostics system to identify some of the possible causes of the motor failing to run. To use this function, count the number of continuous blinks on the controller box red LED when the fault is present.

Blinks Fault Recommended Action

LED on Function normal
2 times Brake lever cut-off operating Check lever return spring, See Brake Cutout.
3 times Brake lever cut-off operating Check lever return spring, See Brake Cutout.
4 times Throttle not returning fully Check throttle free movement or for spring fault
5 times Throttle faulty Check throttle connections and cable, or replace
6 times Low voltage Charge battery
7 times Excessive voltage* Measure voltage with multi tester
8 times Hall sensor in motor faulty Replace motor core
9 times Wrong motor connected* Replace
10 times Overheated, thermostat activated Will return to normal after cooling down
11 times Thermostat faulty Replace controller
12 times Current control fault Controller faulty, replace unit

I did not get a manual with my ezee liv and when when I complained they sent me one for the sprint which they said was essentually the same. so when I saw your problem I dug it out and looked up flashing 8 times, it states hall motor faulty.
Much to my dismay this is of no use as the liv is a brushed motor, not hall effect. Sorry I tried.

On these controllers the 8 flashes are almost invariably damp as Nick says.

This is more likely if the bike is laid down on it's side when still a bit wet making the the cables a conduit to carry water in, and seeing you're on holiday It occurs you might have transported it that way.

Natural drying should cure it, but if not, I've found this is the best way of dealing with it if you have the facilities:

Bring the bike indoors into a small room. Place a fan heater about 2 feet away from the likely electrical area affected, running on 1 kilowatt. Two feet away on the other side, place a dehumidifier drawing air away from the bike. Then close the door on it. That sets up a loop of warm air which is progressively getting more and more dry, and I've found about half to one hour usually does the trick.

If you haven't got a dehumidifier it could be worth you hiring one from a hire centre.
