Fat Frank Tyres

Just thought I'd let anyone who might be wondering whether to switch to balloon tyres how pleased I am with the Fat Franks on my Wisper 705. Previously it was a real effort to cycle without the motor, not very enjoyable. With the Fat Franks I find that I'm happily cycling under my own steam most of the time (admittedly not very fast but I'm not a speed merchant). The only drawback is that I've had to remove the rear mudguard but I've decided that's an acceptable trade -off. I took a while to make the switch but I'm really glad I did

I can second that - the difference it makes is amazing. There's a sweet spot around 30psi and that, combined with the Fat Erse sprung saddle, makes pedalling a breeze. I was lucky that my FF just cleared the mudguard with sufficient room for clogging on ordinary road muck not to be a problem.

I have a gel cover on top of a gel saddle and its the comfiest combination I've found so far, I Googled Fat Erse sprung saddle but the closest I could get was Big Bum! (which is almost 1/2 price just now on Amazon and very tempting as the reviews are great)

I have a gel cover on top of a gel saddle and its the comfiest combination I've found so far, I Googled Fat Erse sprung saddle but the closest I could get was Big Bum! (which is almost 1/2 price just now on Amazon and very tempting as the reviews are great)

It's a Velo wide/comfort saddle, made in the Far East (anag). I got it cheapy, cheap, cheap off ebay as an end-of-line item and honestly, it's the comfiest saddle I have ever used. I picked up a Brooks really cheaply but I don't know that I can be bothered going through all that breaking-in to my backside hassle.

1/ Scimitar, why do fat tyres make pedaling easier?

Hi hech, that was 1/4 of an inch ... But a 1/4 of whatever works just as well (or an 1/8 then one can have 2)

Just the more comfortable ride - things just seem to fly along.
With Brooks saddles, you have to spend a while making them fit you, as they're stiff leather. Once they fit, they're yours for life and you tend to transfer them from your favourite bike to the next. Of course, the solution is to have a Brooks on every bike you own - at a price.
