Apparently the Japanese used bicycles to get down the Malaysian Peninsular (?) in World War 2 to invade and take Singapore.

And the Germans used them in WW2, their troops on the Channel islands used them for example. Those German army bikes had a quick-detach saddle to deter thefts by the civilian population there, though I think the bullet in the head was a stronger deterrent.

I do like the idea of carrying a spare bicycle when you go out cycling. So much quicker if you get a puncture.
