Full face helmets

I was cycling home tonight and didn't realise how much the temperature had dropped and didn't have my face scarf with me. Boy was I cold when I got home.

It got me thinking, rather than all this messing about with a scarf, glasses and a helmet, why not have a full face helmet with a visor? Like a motor bike helmet but not as heavy. It would offer full wind protection and be completely waterproof plus it would keep your head warm.

Then I started looking for one on the internet but couldn't find one. Does anyone know if such a helmet exists? Has anyone tried anything like it? I can see how it might be too hot for normal cyclists but for us of the electrically assisted persuasion, I can see it being a very useful accessory.

I don't think one exists, probably because it would be too hot and sweaty most of the time.

I have seen film of Australia showing cyclists with wrap around helmets very similar to German soldiers WW2 steel helmets, but they were still open at the front.

I have seen one and only one. I saw it fleetingly as the cyclist wearing it was going the other way. It was black, had a visor that covered the face and fitted close - like Magneto's helmet in X-men. I, too, have looked and not found one. I wonder if he made it himself.

I have a motocross helmet with a visor built in but I got that because of it's excellent venting so you may still find it too cold.
I've also seen them designed for pushbikes but only worn by kids pretending to have a motorbike. :D

They sell some at Halfords but I think they are for skating - would work for bikes as well I suppose.

There are some excellent light weight helmets for hang gliding which come with visors, they offer more protection than cycling helmets and if you don't want the motorbike full face look some have removable chin guards. They tend to be a bit too streamlined, but do have ear holes so you can still hear traffic.
