Cheers Dazzie, turns out it was.

The spokes had 'stretched' and so the wheel was flexing under load. The sound was the spokes flexing away from each other and then coming back into contact. The guy at Halfords was very helpful and said I could take it back any time I needed too.

I have to say I'm impressed with the responses from both Halfords and Powabyke. Very pleased that neither left me to muddle along on my own.
