Heinzmann AWD CargoPower Drive System

There is now an AWD (all wheel drive) or two wheel drive sytem from Heinzmann.

It utilises their well proven DirectPower DD hub motor in the front wheel together with their PMS 60 pancake motor driving the rear axle.
More details can be seen via this link:http://www.ebike.heinzmann.com/en/systems/cargopower/motors

Below is in an example of a converted Xtracycle cargo bike with the Heinzmann CargoPower drive system.

IMHO it looks horrendous! But I suppose the actual system could have its uses.

I don't know whether you don't like the cargo bike or the conversion
I wonder if this might be more appealing?

I'm not sure why they didn't fit the higher capacity Heinzmann downtube battery rather one fitted on top of the cargo deck?
Maybe the space in the Xtracycles triangle was bit tight for it or the twin controllers couldn't be squeezed into downtube controller housing.

Must admit I'm not a great fan of cargo bikes, but can see there appeal. But even as cargo bikes go, I think it's pretty ugly. I think it's the different size wheels that make such an impact.
I prefer the stealthy look in an ebike, so the model above is a lot more appealing to me.

Hang about, a cargo bike is utilitarian piece of equipment, it is not supposed to look 'sexy' In this case function over form, you don't buy bog paper on its looks, do you?

Hi Rich,

Cargo or utility bikes are more about versatility and
practicality making it possible to perform so many tasks that can't be performed with a regular bike.
I think of them as the MPV's of cycling.
The reason for the Xtracycle and eZee Expedir smaller diameter rear wheel is to give a lower load height when carrying goods or passengers.

These are just a few examples of electric cargo bikes.

Cargo bikes are increasingly adopting 20" rear wheels now, quite a few around since it makes perfect sense to keep loads low. Some go 20" both ends like the long established Burrows 8freight.

Blimey, someone's a bit touchy!
Like I said I can see the market for them but it's not for me, where's the problem there?

As it happens I don't mind some of the examples that John has posted above, and if I had loads to lug around I'd probably look into them a bit more. The original design I didn't particularly like but maybe I should have just keep quiet!

Putting the cargo weight low down and in the middle makes more sense than having it perched on top of the rear wheel.

On t'other hand, it looks like the R&M bike has rod steering so I doubt it handles like a thoroughbred.

More Escort van than Merc estate I expect.

Riese and Muller put the small wheel - and the load bay - at the front.

There are several cargo bikes with this layout, one of my favourites is the eZee powered Radkutsche Rapid as shown here. http://www.radkutsche.de/tl_files/lastenraeder/Rapid/_DSC5260.JPG
(check out the stand, it must be made of Krupp stahlo_O)

My favorite video is this one where an eZee powered cargo bike blitzes a Bosch powered one, vorsprung aus Shanghai;)
Personally I feel a bit nervous about sticking the front out at a road junction without a clear field of vision.

i wonder about the value of the front dd.

I suppose regen would be very strong and it wouldn't be so much more efficient than the rear motor.

so why?

The point is super quiet 2WD with lots of torque for hauling loads.
If you read the information via the link at the beginning of this thread you can see the performance figures of both motors and how they operate in tandem.

Hi John,
Given its function, I think it looks OK, but why have they put the battery on the rack - surely you'd want to put loads there? And also, I see they're both 250w motors, but does it meet the EN spec with two?

If they wobble about like that on a main road they are gonna get knocked off:eek:

Hi Phil,

I agree, the location of the battery is not ideal, maybe it is for the reasons stated in post No.4?
Regarding the EN spec, I'm not sure what the situation is with that.
