I am considering replacing my 15amp battery this spring by having it reconditioned rather than buying brand new. I seem to remember reading here somewhere of a firm that does recelling and also that the cells used of a better quality (or power)?

Q1 Any recomendatios as to who would do a good job of recelling?
Q2 What are the practical considerations re delivering the battery by post?
Q3 What about my existing controller? Will it still work?
Q4 Any other considerations (e.g battery management system?) that I should be aware of?
Q5 Is it all worth the trouble?

This company will do a good job of recelling for you with no BMS problems:

Insat International (BGA): The UK's leading eBike Battery Specialists

http://www.bga-reworking.co.uk/

1A Gateway Mews, Ringway, London N11 2UT

Tel: +44 (0)208 361 1790

Email: info@bga-reworking.co.uk

https://twitter.com/bgainsat

I've posted batteries, but make sure they are very well packaged to ensure they are protected. They aren't approved for postage so very much at own risk.

Q5 depends on the quotation for recelling against the cost of a new battery.

Q5 yes

You can specify better specification batteries. Although this may initially be more expensive, it means you get better performance for longer, which could work out cheaper in the long term.

Give Jimmy (Insat) a ring. he'll explain how postage works. You can choose, which cells you want. You don't need to understand what ones they are, but you can ask for more range (capacity), more power, longer life or lighter weight. If you just want the same spec cells as you already have, they'll probably be the cheapest.

possibly.
For comparison, a new 36V 15AH rear rack battery for John F's bike (it's the same battery for the Big Bear) with Samsung 29E cells costs £345 including postage.

There's this one for £215 plus about £30 for duty:

You can buy the Samsung 29E cells alone for about £200 including delivery:

can you see end users welding these cells themselves?

I work for Royal mail, they can be sniffy about batteries , specially li -ion,,use the post at your peril ,re batteries.
I seen the care that goes with packet sorting, but then again , can't see 'em Luzzing power pack across the office.

re posting Li ion batteries
I used to make and sell bike lights and near the end of my career doing this
about 4 years ago one of my bikelight sets was impounded and destroyed by RM just after they changed the rules .
used courier services after that but you need to make sure they are happy shipping batteries .
so beware of posting li ions

Thanks everyone, I'll give this some serious thought. Just back from a lanzarote holiday where I hired a khalkoff Agutta with 7000km on. Very nice bike. Now I wonder how much a battery would be for one of those?!

Off topic, sorry
I'm off to Lanzarotte in a month. Where did you hire the bike from (and how much.)
Thanks
Keith

Papagayo Bikes. There are several bike hire places that do ebikes. 28euros per day (dearer than some) plus 3euros for helmet hire. Happy at paying the higher price for a quality bike and decent helmet (also came with good lock and pannier)
