Help with Ezee kit problem

A friend brought round his cargo bike for me to look at. It has an ezee front drive kit fitted, I would guess the kit is around 5 years old.

The controller has an LED on it. It comes on, and stays on. When you twist the throttle, the motor gives a kick, stops, then controller flashes five times (throttle error).

I have checked the throttle signal all the way back to the board, and its getting 0.8v to 4.5v as I would expect.

At first I suspected a knackered throttle, but now I'm wondering if its a dodgy controller.

Anyone seen anything similar before, or have any suggestions?

Evening Mike,

My Ezee kit played up a few days ago...
Power dropped-out & was only delivering about 1.5 amps on both throttle & pas:
Controller diagnostic led was flashing 5 then 4 repeated ad nausiam.

As you say, 5 & 4 are both throttle malfunctions, but my problem only went away when a new Ezee controller was fitted.

Mine began as an intermittent fault, but quickly progressed to permanent.

Luckily mine is covered by warranty: Ezee China have never seen this combination before, so lets hope I don't see it again.

Hello JackHandy,

Apparently this started intermittently, but is now totally repeatable.

Hmm, I"m pretty convinced its a controller issue then.

Presumably a ku65 would work ? Or would he be better off with a reoplacement from ezee?

Hi Mike,
Taking into consideration the age of the bike, it could be worth trying an alternative to the ezee controller, but I couldn't say which would work:
I'd have thought one that gives 20-25a sensored should be ok (unless there's anything exotic about the ezee motor).

I don't know much about that ezee motor, but I can confirm that it's 3 phase, sensored.

The original controller has 6 fets, so I presume it runs about 15-20amp.

I'll probably give it a go with a KU65. Anyone else ever done this?

You need a bit more current than that. You could solder the shunt in the KU65 up to about 20 amps, but a KU93 at 22 amps would be better; however, it's a lot larger, as are most 20 amp controllers. Ezee use higher spec FETs in their controllers, so they can get away with six, The S09P would probably work quite well too, and it has a nice LCD display. It's sensorless, but that shouldn't be a problem with the Ezee motor.

Thanks D8veh.

The increase in size won't be a problem - the bike is bloody enormous! It's a Madsen Bucket bike, capable of carrying an adult and four kids.

I don't suppose anyone has a spare KU93 (or s09) they want to sell me ?

Hi Mike,

The eZee kit in question will be a Mk1 which was superseded by the Mk2 in 2012.

5 flashes at controller LED does normally indicate a throttle fault, but it could be possibly be the controller.

The early controllers were discontinued in 2012 and a new one is available as part of a complete upgrade kit that is compatible with Mk1 motors and consists of the following components:
  • 20 amp controller 36 to 48v
  • 4 mode LED handlebar console with 5 power levels + cruise control etc.
  • weatherproof wiring loom
  • twistgrip or thumb throttle
  • 12 manget pedelec sensor
  • brake levers with electric cut offs

Thanks for that. What sort of price are we talking?

Looks like a great fun machine - but can't help wondering how far it would deviate from the intended line if the kids spotted a cute little doggie, and all leant over the same side?
