Hub Motor rattling - not a lot but annoying

Hi pedelecs,

Anyone with experience of hub motor noise?

It sounds like a consistent but relatively quiet rattle. I've removed the motor out and the gear cogs could be more flush. There is a 2-3mm gap near the circlip which allows the gearing to give across the axle a little. See image attached. I'm wondering if that could be doing it?

Will a thicker circlip do the trick?

Your thoughts appreciated, as always.

Best wishes

You're not going to believe this, but have a look anyway.
Hub motors can make a real mechanical sounding noise, even with vibration coming through the handle bars on a front hub, when their electrical connections are poor.
Told you you wouldn't believe it.
Have a look at ant connectors on the phase cables to the motor. There is generally a connector near the motor. Look for any signs of heat damage or corrosion that could cause a resistive connection. Bullet connectors are particularly prone to this.
I replaced mine with MT30 connectors. Got rid of a really nasty sounding rattle and vibration.
