No problem Dave, I often get out of synch with another post, especially those times when I wander off to do something else in the middle of typing and then finish later, only to find the subject has moved on.

Thanks again Dave and Flecc.
I have had the motor in pieces two or 3 times to check where the rumbling was coming from and to regrease etc. I agree its a few minutes job only. I did this following forum postings maybe 18 months ago.

The difficulty I'm having is establishing where the "clutch" is. The links take to photos of the assembly withdrawn from the hub and show the gears which is fine. I don't want to keep taking up forum space, but can you point to the clutch please and maybe describe its mode of operation. There must be some more disassembly to access the clutch?
Thanks

The clutch is that disc thing that holds the three gear wheels. the rollers are inside. I can't remember because I didn't need to look at my rollers, but you might be able to remove one of the cover plates to access the rollers. If not, you should be able to free it off by giving it a good twist in the opposite direction to what it normally goes.

Right, and thanks Dave. It all makes sense now. If only I'd stripped and cleaned that up before. When I got this bike the hub motor was full of nasty gunge. In my attempts to quieten its operation down - all of which failed and I now know why - I only wish I had realised and stripped an cleaned that up! Oh well!
