On my way to work this morning I saw an interesting self-build. It was an ordinary pushbike with a small petrol engine strapped to the frame, like the engine from one of those mini motorbikes. It came along side me briefly but I wasn't able to see how it was connected. It then flew off round the corner and up a hill at way more than 15mph.
This was in a town centre.

There are some petrol cyclemotor engines on sale still, and sixty years ago they were extremely popular with over a million on the road in the early 1950s. Some frame mount, but most were over the rear wheel or inside the rear wheel within a very large hub shell.

To be legal they have to be registered with a rear number plate and subject to all the moped laws, but they aren't subject to a 15 mph speed limit.

Yes my dad had a cyclemaster built in the rear wheel I remember going out for rides and he would have his hand on my back to push me along, mmm happy days.

This one was strapped to the frame and definitely did not have a number plate. I hope I see it again and have a better chance to look at the details.

That's the front end of a Velosolex, have to run with it to start it first, rather them than me!
