Good god.....today has been taxing enough already without the spectre of cyclists paying road tax
.......supposed I've missed it now.....what was the general concensus then ?

I've remarked before that it could be a benefit. It could only cost far less than the £15 moped tax and would shut up those motorists who feel cyclists have no place on roads they don't pay for.
The smart move would be for cyclists to have tax discs, but like e-cars etc, free because they are environmentally friendly, the perceived benefit without the cost.

NO NO NO Flecc.......no more bloody taxes otherwise I really WILL chain myself to no.10's railings.
The next step would then be to tax us for walking on the pavements to pay for the upkeep !!!!!

According to precedent. Those under 16 cannot have fixed penalties imposed for pavement cycling, ergo, no road fund tax.And at what age? would they hit the little ones when the stabilizers came off
In any case the original question is defective, there's no such thing as "road tax", The original Road Fund Tax changed very long ago to VED (Vehicle Excise Duty).

Good idea. Why should the wealthy be inconvenienced by so many ordinary people cluttering up the pavements?The next step would then be to tax us for walking on the pavements to pay for the upkeep !!!!!

The way their top tax rate is going down they soon wont be having to pay for any of us poor mortals needs.........

Whilst the acquisition of a tax disc would perhaps go some way to appease the cyclist hating motorist, I would personnally not bother as I have no interest in ameliorating the intolerant prejudices we often recieve from 'cage drivers'. They would hate us just as much whatever tax we paid.
Secondly, "Road Fund Licences" ended years ago, it is now termed "Vehicle Excise Duty" and as such is purely opportunist taxation by those at Westminster. The VED raised nowadays has no relationship to roads maintenance budgets, which are allegedly funded from general taxation, although they have spent barely 50 pence on the roads where I live over the last 10 years.
Perhaps some sort of general bicycle levy may bear fruit if the authorities were to commit to spending this on genuine traffic free cycling infrastructure.

What, you mean take our hard earned cash for bike tax and spend it on lavish health and Safety meetings, or personal expenses, or Duckhouses, or yet another consultative seminar on basket weaving held in Barbados!!!! Surely not!!

I noticed that the Tax everything that moves Brigade is out in force today.
This is a Ludicrous idea which could cost twice as much to enforce and police, and I would be one of its first outlaws of the cycle lanes. Beware of the english spring.

Miss the show but maybe a good thing as I’d only end up shouting at the radio. My objections are as follows. Cyclists fall into two groups those that own cars/motorcycles and those that don’t. I suspect those of us who fall into the first group are the largest by quite some way.
If you run a vehicle then you already paid road tax and when you ride your bike you are choosing not to take your car on the road thus helping save the planet and keep congestion down.
If you’re in the group that doesn’t run a vehicle then although you don’t pay any road tax you should be rewarded for your green lifestyle and given free use of the roads.
