Keep it simple stupid.
There is a lot to be said to keeping these e-bikes as simple and accessible as possible. The more complexity that we ask of these bikes, the more failure is likely and the more difficult it is to sort out the problem.
I must say I am impressed by the few failures we have experienced with the Bafang BPM hub drive,a couple with gear failures and so easy to repair. With only 250 watts asked of this motor it is not stressed.
The great advantage of hub drive is the rest of the bike transmission system has the reliability history of many years of derailleur gearing, the gearing is normal bike with only rider power input.
Bosch had a big argument with Shimano over failures in the Nexus hub gearing, that gearing was never meant to accept Bosch power plus rider power and couldn't take that power.
Ok some argue that the hub drive places greater torque directly onto the bikes spokes...we have experienced some failures of spokes, the source of those failures is difficult to determine but the solution is simple and not expensive.
Most of the failures of these bikes is over complicated wiring,Kudos and Woosh are both trying to get these bikes to single cable looms with multi plugs at the display and controller.
Lot to be said for keeping it simple.

the BPM motors are certainly robust, Replacement gearboxes and ball bearings are cheap too. Perfect choice for high milers.

An approach well proven long ago by Panasonic, everything on the right within the crank unit sealed crankcase:

I would like to see an LCD that has plugs for brakes, lights and whatever and just one wire out to the controller which could be user fed through the frame. At the other end wire colour code would make it easy to solder to the controller end plugs or a rats tail wire coming out of the controller.

I would like to see an LCD with a clock too.

And an LCD that is fully waterproofed at the factory.

And I could go on (and on) but I won't...

Even better, a single optical fibre path connecting everything, the frequencies of oscillations determining which is signalling.

Just like the multiple telephone connections in a single fibre.

No more wet weather worries.

you still need to bring electrical power to the sensors and display.
I often wonder why battery case manufacturers don't have a cable trunking built into the mounting base of downtube batteries. That would make running the bus cable between controller to the handlebars instruments much neater.

I would think the next improvement could be can-bus or data line transmission, all you need is 4 wires, 2 power and 2 data and each unit on the system has its own address.

Bob, how about going one step further, ADSL signal is ghosted over a single pair of wire, carrying power, voice and data.

I think that this is something a bit of artistic drilling and a dob or two of silicone will be fixing in the coming months...
