That short centre section where the failures occurred is very much steeper than 14%, nearer 25%. I live up a 14% so am very familiar with that.
Some observations on the video. First the rough surface wasn't helping, it would have been much easier as smooth tarmac. Second, it would have helped if the rider had got off the saddle and gained some extra input from that.
Some lack of rider skill there I would say, made harder by using an electric bike at all.
That track looks quite good fun, why anyone would make it a clod climb by using an electric bike I don't know. A push bike, yes, a trail bike 125cc upwards, yes. But an electric bike? Too much weight for not enough power. Horses for courses but that one's a nag
I think his main problem is that he has to try and pedal on the steep bit, which makes steering and control much more tricky. If he had throttle control, he could concentrate more on balance and weight transfer, whilst steering straight. If I had a Kalkhoff, I'd have to open it up and find some way of hacking the controller for a throttle. I bet it can be done if you have the will.
