The driving was awful but the cyclist hardly helped the situation by handling it like that.

Last night my boss was traveling home. He approached an intersection and a SUV was waiting for him to pass. A car behind the SUV undertook it and pulled out causing my boss the hit him broadside. Totally the car drivers fault. The car sped away with its drivers door badly damaged. My boss with bruises and a damaged bike.

I write this as this happens everyday with 10's of thousands of near misses as well. I see drivers routinely use their vehicles as weapons. I have it happen many times to myself. I have a camera on my bike but do not bother to report to the police because they are rarely interested. It is blantant assault with a deadly weapon but it seems that we, the cyclist, are fair game with no recourse to legal action being taken.

Laws need to be improved to help cyclist. We have the right to use the road but no rights when it comes to the terrible and dangerous treatment by drivers. Just like that man that got punched. He probably had one too many of those drivers and said what he said.

I agree with the comment that the cyclist could have handled it better but then he would have waisted his breath.

Sharing the roads at it's finest.

A cyclist riding 3 abreast.
vs
A car pulling into an advanced stop box.
FIGHT!!!

It's the bit missing from the video that could be most revealing. The dude on the bike could well have kicked or punched the Audi out of shot, which would in some way explain the punch he received.

Cr@p behaviour on both sides there.

You never know who is filming you when you lose it lol

From my assessment, as stated, it appears neither handled the situation well. The cyclist was clearly racing to catch him up and escalate the situation.

We need to learn to share the road together with respect for one another.

Yikes just realised as stated it wasn't the drive lol

The cyclist certainly could have avoided being assaulted by not chasing after the Audi and by not confronting the occupants. With hindsight, that would have been his best course of action because he would not have ended up on his arse in the road had he followed it.

If we are going to apportion blame, then I would point the finger at the Audi occupants. The Audi entered the cycle only box, which was the catalyst. The Audi pulled away dangerously, which added fuel to an incendiary situation and it was an occupant from the Audi which committed an assault. The assault was unnecessary and I detest this sort or arrogant bullying attitude.

However, reluctantly, I have to say that the best course of action in these situations is to just put up with it. So what if the Audi entered the cycle box? Does it matter to the extent of putting yourself in danger? Probably not. There are people driving cars who capable of killing in a fit of rage for less and we don't know who they are. The cyclist was lucky that it was just a typical Audi occupant on this occasion.

I agree that the cyclist was probaby the author of his demise. I do confront motorist when I get the chance and stay calm. I also make sure they see my camera and let them know they are being recorded as was the reason I stopped to chat. It would be very nice if video evidence submitted by cyclist resulted in the appropriate charges and fines being levied. I hear some do get follow through but most fail to be persued. I have not passed on any video but one of these days I'll see what happens when I do.

The advice from the police is best, don't attempt to police which provokes disputes, just report offences. The car driver's attempt to get alongside the cyclists in the advanced stop box could have been met by taking the registration number and reporting with that.

Yes I know that might not do any good, but from a public order point of view it's infinitely preferable to the aggressive approach that the cyclist thought appropriate. Enough such complaints to the police can eventually lead to action.
