First of all.....apart from wishing you all a Happy New Year.....Id like to thank everyone again for their help and advice.

You will probably be relieved to know that I finally made a decision and decided a tablet wasn't for me as I have my phone for connecting whilst out and about.
So, laptop it was.....a decision at last ....and I am currently trying to get my head around Windows 8  !!

I bought am HP Pavilion G6 2210sa.

Its got Intel i5 processor
6GB Memory
1TB Hard drive

Apparently the spec is quite good, however, as a woman......my main and most important reason for buying it is.....

ITS RED !!!

a glorious lovely deep red colour, totally matches my lounge décor, and when I get to grips with it I know that I will love it :D

Thanks again guys

Happy New Year Lynda - while you get your head around Windows 8 - install the classic start menu app - that was what i missed most when i upgraded to windows 8 - mine was a up grade from windows 7 - but think it should work ok.... Enjoy your new laptop...

It's good, it's got a great spec... It's a Lubley colour

But it's not an iPad

Dear Lyn

When the day comes that you get your long awaited iPad, I will spray it in what ever colour takes your fancy... Even pink glitter is an option :p

The memory issue isn't an issue, except from the stone casters

Is there really life after Windows 98? I've managed to write five books on this = of the quill pen and they sell just as well as if I'd invested in Windows 8 or 9.5 or whatever. One can have too much modernity, methinks! Hence my love of BMW motor bikes, Honda C90 scooters and Juicy Bikes - they all do the job they're designed for superbly well.
Happy New Year to all, 2012/2013/1947 or whatever it is!
Tom

well with windows 8 you have certainly got that. with out wishing to become one of those "windows xxxx was far better moaners" I have to say that the new interface is complete pants. They have tried to make to far more like a apple mac experience with extra bells and whistles and just succeeded in making it completely confusing with far to many magic controls tucked away to suddenly happen when least expected just because you moved mouse to wrong part of screen or touched the wrong part of touch pad..

Go to this corner for this, this corner for something else. Do some magic movement to make something magically appear. and the track pad control are awful who's bright idea was it that the edge of track pad would do something special ?. They have designed a system for touch screen / tablets and completely forgot about those that want a normal computer (even the windows help tutorials seem to assume you are using a tablet).

Heres another one. Java only works if you run explorer from the desktop it does not work if run from main windows charms (another dumb word) screen.

As for how its meant to used in a office environment is any ones guess.

Which have I got GaRRy ......the dark side or the fun ? :)

Im actually quite enjoying finding my way around it...........the interface means that I can pretend its an iPad lolol

I think it looks funky !

Agree with you about the name 'charms' for that bar....ridiculous....and I admit that if I had needed to actually 'work' on it I wouldn't have gone with Windows8.....at least not for now before the daft bits are ironed out.

I did however get myself locked out for hours as I had forgotten my password having had to find so many new ones yesterday as I couldn't remember ones for things that opened automatically on my other computer......after a couple of hundred 'variations on a theme' I finally got in :)

Lets see how I get on today finding my way around.....but Im always up for a challenge...

Oh dear Lynda, what a shame, should have gone for the i7 processor, 16Gb of Ram and at least a 2TB hard drive........I'm amazed it actually works with such low spec:(

You even got the colour wrong, should have been Rose.

Then there is your bike, you must spend at least 3K for something half decent.

Doesn't look like 2013 is going very well for you so far:(

I find Windows 8 brilliant, now before I get roasted for that, I have a fanless Shuttle XS35GT computer it worked well with XP was slower on Win 7 and absolutely flies on Win 8 with a standard install no custom drivers at all, the previous Windows required many specific drivers to be loaded after install.
It boots in about 10 seconds to fully stable and ready to use (I do have an SSD), the Metro interface is a disaster but I only use it to switch to desktop at start up, other than that I use the desktop the same as Win 7 etc.
