I've never heard of a successful amateur attempt, but it would be very difficult.

The GoCycle has a small front wheel motor in a mag wheel but it's a tiny affair and noisy in a buzzing kind of way:

Yeah I can't see anywhere to put panniers large enough to carry a laptop with extras plus archery kit like I do with my bike.

Some versions of the old Ecolux Tornado Electric Vehicles UK had mag / composite ? wheels.I used one for a couple of years -eventually the screws holding the motor in the rear wheel started to move and were impossible to tighten fully-it still ran ok though and was the most reliable electric bike I have used. The wheels also developed cracks [surface] and the bushes on the swing arm[ made of nylon] wore quickly giving the rear suspension a I nice laateral movement. The battery lasted for a couple of years---even though I do tend to hammer my bikes.
