I just came across this 8-Fun ("Ba-Fang") kit, with very clean electrical connections (a bit like the recent Wisper e-bikes, this is the 8-Fun E-Bus PCB box). I saw a similar mini-controller with a Crystalite kit, on this forum, I think it was a DIY electrified Brompton (EDIT yes, see reply below):

They are certainly getting tidier now Dan. Really it was about time the top companies got their act together on e-bike connectors since they've been poor for far too long.

The rapid growth in the market recently probably helps encourage the investment.

Connectors have long being a bitch of mine.
I like mini jacks, 3 pole stereo for throttles and 2 pole for the brakes, a bit of heat shrink and you have a neat and replaceable system.
Whenever possible open up the controller and hide as many plugs inside as possible. The best for this were the old analogue Crystalye and Ananda controllers.

I'm testing a new handle bar controller myself, replaces the throttle, power switches, indicator lamps and makes for a Euro compliant 3 speed pedalec system were the motor power isn't dependant on how fast you pedal.
First impressions are very good. I will report fully soon.

Nice to see you back on form Dan!:D

I was thinking to myself nothing much new seems to happening with e bikes, now all the big players in the bike world are introducing E bikes. I fink 2011 will be interesting especially if you have deep pockets......

If you go on their website, the kits and batteries do look very smart, especially the batteries. Shame there seems to be no websites like these in the UK, selling quality kits with plenty of pictures and info on what you are buying.

Yeah, why do the germans get all the new stuff from 8-Fun and nothing comes to the UK ??

By the way, I started a thread about using 18650 cells, as I am not familiar with e-bike applications (they're normally used for LED lights, etc.)

Very neat looking kit. Only issue for me is the permanent wiring of the ebrakes (or so it appears). I'm sure there will be other variations in time.

Good point, didn't notice that first time round. Does knock the appeal of this kit somewhat :(

Nothing new can really happen with ebikes at present, you might get a slightly different looking bike,or a bigger amp hour battery with more range in the near future ,performance wise there will be very little difference between any of them,in fact due to legal requirements some of the older bikes with a throttle could be more interesting.
