At last, a European rival for Panasonic and Yamaha! Bosch have announced a new e-bike motor system that drives though the chain, this time designed to EU law and not Japanese law. The details look as though power assist cadence will be under rider control to some degree

All the preliminary details on this link:

No idea what's different about the motor, but the line drawing shows the battery inside the downtube, as opposed to the usual position behind it. Is that possible only because an 8ah is smaller? is the shorter wheelbase likely to be better?

I think the partnership have been doing their market research diligently and realised that many don't like the lengthened appearance of e-bikes with rear of seat tube battery, which also compromises the geometry. Longer wheelbases don't affect riding much, the steering is slightly "slower", i.e. the bike is not quite so instantly responsive into corners, but that only effects riding at the extreme limits.

In frame batteries can be larger as well, the Panasonic 10 Ah one will easily go within an average frame, and both BionX and Izip have long used in-frame batteries.

What interests me is that they say they are sensing pedalling speed as well as the speed and pedal force that the Panasonic system measures. This makes it possible that a rider might have some control on cadence. Most importantly, the power phasedown isn't likely to be as early as the Japanese systems which are influenced by their strict laws.

Anyway, competition is good, and with Yamaha and now Bosch going the Panasonic route it widens our choice. Like Tex, I can't wait to see the outcome of the partnership of two such highly regarded companies, it could be rather special.

That would be good. Presumably the motor should also do a much better job of sticking to the EU regulation about the maximum speed at which the motor can continue to assist the rider. If the speed sensor uses wheel rotation to calculate speed, then perhaps the the rider will be allowed to configure the bike for different wheel diameters, about which he can lie - the software equivalent of installing a non-regulation cog on a panasonic.

That is fantastic news. Bosch are using those batteries in lawnmowers and the other day I was looking at one in Costco and commented that it would make a great bike battery. The battery can aslo be fully charged in 45 minutes.

The Botch power tool battery (is it the 123?) seem to be a firm favourite with home built e biker's. just thought an 8 amp (same as yamaha) could have been a little more generous in capacity, depends on how good it is though I guess.

but this could well be my first crank bike...will run the both though, as I like my throttle. for daily exercise I don't use or need the throttle, but when touring, if I get a bit knackered it is a godsend

Hi,

I hope forum members would not be disappointed. Sometime in early 2009 I have news that Bosch was looking for engineers for electric bikes, their location is in Su Zhou right across the road from the guy who makes my controller, and one of his ex-colleague from Curtis Instrument (China) is working there now. Sure or maybe a German or 2 are heading the design and engineering team there for this.

Thanks for the information Wai Won, no bad thing having a major Oriental input on an e-bike unit design in view of all the expertise there. I think one of the main interests in this is that it's likely to be free of the influence of the very restrictive Japanese law on power delivery that affects their chain drive system design.

Also, whether it is made in China (not neccesarily a bad thing), or not, it will undoubtedly have German quality control and perhaps more importantly (I would imagine) established Bosch service outlets in Europe. I for one am very interested in seeing what they come up with. I just hope that mass availability of these also brings prices down somewhat (in Europe). If the battery technology also shares a production base with power tools, it can only be good for performance, cost and availability.
