Hub vs Deraileur

Still pondering whether my next bike purchase should have hub gears or deraileurs. I'm attracted by the hub gears because of the apparent low maintenance and I do a lot of cycling in the rain and it often gets muddy. I'm pretty sure I can live with the 300% range of hub gears. I've been reading up a little on the pros and cons and I just read that hub gears are less efficient (93% vs 98%) than deraileurs. Can anyone give an opinion on whether is this something that would be noticed in practise?
Also I read that deraileurs only maintain that level of efficiency when they are new/clean or well maintained. How dirty or worn does a deraileur system have to get before the hub gears outperform it?

I've never found the efficiency differences noticeable in practice and they'd be even more difficult to detect on an e-bike ehere the motor is sharing the work. However, I think a derailleur would have to be in very poor condition before it performed at hub gear levels of efficiency.

In practice though I'd always choose on the other convenience and personal preference factors, disregarding efficiency.
