A new scheme will soon start a 2 year trial at Coventry: "Drivers who GIVE UP their cars will be offered £3,000 in 'credit' to spend on public transport, electric scooters and taxis under new green plans." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9281039/Drivers-offered-3-000-credit-cars-shift-greener-transport.html

Beware the Mail is not always 100% accurate reporting but the scheme sounds intersting.
Like scooters still being illegal outside of the official trial areas.

Coventry is also one of the scooter trial areas, so I suppose a £3000 credit against buses / trains / taxis etc could well include scooter hire.

Thanks for the information, yes that makes sense for the 12 months of the trial.

I'd be surprised if the trial doesn't turn into a permanent arrangement after the 12 months are up - and scooter hire / private scooters being legal everywhere shortly after. Just speculation there though.

I agree, the US firms pressure and the government's desire for a US trade deal have been behind this all along. Biden instead of Trump might upset that apple cart though.

If the scooters are legalised it will present many problems for a while. The government wants to adopt the European standard of 20 kph (12.5 mph) speed limit and 350 watt power limit, but many the public have already bought and the hire ones are 15 mph and the hire ones are 500 watt.

A mess.

Old news, so maybe they struggled to get anywhere in The Year of Covid:

I particularly like some of the heavily upvoted comments in the DM:
> First stop flying, then take away their cars - once people cannot move then they cannot organise and move against your authoritarian rules All part of subjugating the general population

Normally, you'd have that as a socialist extremist, but these are are Tory-loving DM readers railing against the government.
What a topsy-turvy world.
