The posts above in praise of the Union and the Union flag highlight a strange dichotomy in the British people. They often praise this union of four very different peoples, but are just as often opposed to the European Union of different peoples.

I've worked and stayed in Scotland, Wales and France, and language apart, have found more in common with many of the French than I have with many of the Scots and Welsh.

I see no problem with having a pride in one's district's achievements and a friendly rivalry while also celebrating union. For continued harmony it's only necessary to celebrate the achievements of others as well, as I've been doing in this thread.

This morning sees another partial redressing of the medals imbalance with Somerset's Ed McKeever winning a gold medal in canoeing at Eton Dornay, good to see.

I've always been querying this Jazper!

Whenever anyone has said there's nowhere else to explore in this world, I've suggested they launch an expedition to find the long lost Second World,

It must be there somewhere, surely?

Me too, originally. I used to be a Sussex Separatist, national anthem:

"Sussex by the Sea, good old Sussex by the Sea.
You can tell them all
That we'll stand or fall
For good old Sussex by the Sea."
;)
I am a Hove separiatist actually, and would like to remove the Hove out of Brighton & Hove and return us back to town status.

Oh yes, flecc and jazper, its there alright.....I did that expedition years ago, it was uninhabited so I took control and now rule it full time all on my own.....and I LOVE it :D

I only allow visitors in one at a time .....and I occasionally visit the rest of you, in whichever world you think you are in.

( That sun is quite hot today, isnt it ? lol )

Yeah! Go Somerset!
Being born and bred in Somerset this is great news! I had no idea our latest Gold medallist was from Somerset. flecc how do you know all these things?!
But this just shows that Somerset is more elite and important than London, Yorkshire or Scotland.
I believe that the Wurzels are uncontroversial proof of this fact! Ooh arhhhh! Youngin!! Proper job!!

Barry.

I don't know Lynda. None of the trackers have followed the Geordie area as such, so I have to start from winning names. Obviously I only tracked London athletes from the beginning, and when the claims of Yorkshire and Scotland appeared, they were easy to ascertain since both those areas have the pride to keep track and post accordingly as I was doing for London. No Geordies have been doing that it seems.

The great Brendan Foster CBE who founded the Great North Run was an Olympic champion, winning Bronze in the 10,000 metres in the 1976 games and has been outright winner at the European games and the Commonwealth games. He was born at Hebburn, at that time County Durham but now Tyne and Wear.

John Herdman, coach of the Canadian Womens Football team which won Bronze at this Olympics is a Geordie.

Since Garry challenged me on the figures, I've kept tabs on all the wins so that I know the status of all winning areas from that point. When it's over shortly, I'll post the latest relative positions of Scotland, Yorkshire and London to the whole of the UK.

Yes of course Lynda and I've no doubt there are many others past and present. For outsiders like me, it can be difficult to know exactly what area does constitute Geordieland, especialy with the various boundary changes over time. It's bit like the designation of cockney in London. That's supposed to be anyone born within the sound of Bow Bells, but Bow Bells were removed for years during WW2 and since motor traffic and jet aircraft arrived, much of the time no-one can hear them anyway.

When you are born and bred in the towns bordering the Tyne from the mouth at Shields along to Newcastle these are generally known as true geordies, if you move away from the North east in general most people are happy to be known as Geordies.
Once you get out of the confines of newcastle to the north you become Northumbrian with a distinct accent.....and as for south...
Geordie does not go as far south as Sunderland for example....... and certainly not as far down as Dave ( Muckymits) who likes to think hes a geordie but knows he isnt really ROFLOL !!! ( joke dave, calm down ! ):p

YAY....Mo .....fantastic !!.....( surely he could be a geordie ? lol )

He could have been, but luckily for us his parents brought him here as a little boy and settled in a very flat area of London, ideal for running and enabling his latent talent to be spotted later by a good schoolmaster.

He's an Arsenal fan, so very London in that respect as well.
