Note this sentence at the outset of the article:

Any lack of absolute efficiency is less notable with electric assist...

an indication of their recognition that this is a combination of two sources of excess inefficiency with a high powered unit that gives chains a tough time.

Belt drives have nothing like the efficiency of chain and the hype surrounding the Gates drive doesn't alter that. I've explained the physics of the problem previously. Equally the NuVinci's inefficiency has been commented on by reviewers, it being sufficient to be noticeable to riders.

Hi Flecc

I think it is a way forward the can up the power output off the motor to overcome all the losses getting 250 watts at the rear wheel and still be within the law

yes the downfall is battery life but Bosch will solve that problem

what a smooth silent maintenance free setup Going to be expensive But top off the range Costs

For the purposes of legality, it is the motor output, not power at the back wheel which is the deciding factor.

Well, they describe it as a 'Quantuum leap forward'
As a Quantuum Leap is very small indeed, perhaps they are right!

We had 48 quantum leaps in our shop today, 17 were sideways...

The original Nuvinci hub was very heavy, unacceptably so, it was a flop. They then redesigned it and halved the weight,Batavus released an e-bike with the new Nuvinci 360 hub but it did not sell well and finally dropped the idea. Maybe it was like the old Daff belt transmission,a great idea in principle but unless someone will buy it it's a flop.
I noticed Stevens of Hamburg are offering a bike with Bosch power and Nuvinci hub, retail about E2100.00-perhaps the pedelec experts could give that a visual review.
I got a bit put off Nuvinci when I tried to talk to the boss at a show in Den Bosch-despite my explaining to the promo girl that I was an OEM buyer and considering putting the hub into one of our bikes,he appeared more interested in chatting to his mates than doing real business-I waited patiently for 20 mins and gave up.
It had an interesting price point against the latest Shimano Alfine 11 speed hub, which is so expensive, but in the end we realised that even 8 speeds is more than enough gearing with the power of rider plus motor,3 speeds is often ok.
