Parts from the USA

I just bought a reasonable Chinese 36v controller from somewhere in the US. Including postage, it was slightly cheaper than the same component quoted without postage sold by a UK company! Exchange rates are pretty favourable at the moment... also made it under the wire at the post office:rolleyes:

I've heard that if your order under £18 you don't get charged postage or VAT, not 100% sure how true that is but its held for me so far.

That's true, I ordered several memory cards quite cheaply from the channel islands, then panicked I'd be charged VAT/import duty on top, but then I read about this £18 limit for exemption from both (there's a name for it, but I forget), and lo and behold they were delivered in several packages, each valued under £18 :D.

That'll be 7dayshop Stuart. It's where I've always bought my inkjet and photo supplies, all VAT exempt. There are moves afoot to end this, failed so far, but restrictions are likely to be brought in on how many businesses operate via the Channel Islands. People like Tesco are routing orders via there to get this exemption for example, clearly an abuse which can't continue.

Whatever next? E-bikes VAT free? We wouldn't want that, would we. :D

Would you mind posting details Andrew? I'm interested in sourcing a 36V controller just in case I blow my existing 24V (supposedly) one up which I'm test running at 36V.

@flecc: I wasn't clear - I meant I couldn't recall the name for the £18 limited VAT exemption: I think its something like "small items relief" & exempts from VAT & import duty on items up to £18 from ch. islands & maybe EU too, but anyone please check these facts before ordering from abroad :D I don't know if it applies to US imports for instance, but others will know :).

The shop was called "mymemory" and I found the prices very competitive, though was a few months ago and memory prices change very fast; I'd definitely recommend them (they sell handy portable/pocket USB multi-card readers too - the sandisk one I got was very good!) though compare prices first :).

I know that one as well, but always worth checking 7dayshop as well, since they are fiercely competitive and handle all inkjet and photographic supplies as well. Check the postage cost though.

Chris Rouse at TNC Scooters. Does paypal payments if you ask too. Need to go directly to email and ask for a quote, their system is only auto for the USA.. Make sure you exactly spec what you want and make sure he quotes your spec back! In my email comms I slipped from a CT-660B8 to a CT-660B9 during the flight over the atlantic. Should have checked. Ah well. Hope it still works!
