Hi again 3angle,

You have probably realised by now that advice from the forum can varied and contentious.

Ultimately, the best advice is to try as many bikes as you can before you buy to find what suits you.
Then maybe submit a shortlist to get further opinion which you can question or challenge.

Hi John,

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't really have time to try any!

I just wanna get on asap really. Got to be a proper price and really good quality though.

Hope to get some inspiration soon or probably the Xipi it is unless anyone can stick a throttle on a Haibike!?!?!

Hi,

Having tried both of these bikes ( the older model Forza ) and I understand the newer version is going to take some beating, so I can certainly recommend them.
Just to clarify Lynda, the new Forza is totally different to the previous model and has changed from front to rear drive.
It has a different frame and the new eZee rear motor, new console, 10 speed gears, 120mm front suspension travel and can have a battery upgrade to 20Ah or 34Ah with a dual battery setup etc., etc.

The Haibike has a big advantage over many of the Bosch powered bikes, the motor has been turned upside down to give much greater ground clearance. Also I must say that the design and spec has been specifically designed to take rough off road usage. If I were buying such a bike I would find out if the Haibike can be fitted with a throttle,it cannot be that difficult.
I rode the Haibike at Presteigne and was very impressed.
Hope that helps

Fitting a fully acting throttle to one of the sophisticated crank units like the Panasonic, Bosch, Daum or Impulse units isn't possible using their present circuitry, it means taking that out of circuit and using another controller externally instead. In turn that means the complete loss of the sophisticated control features and handlebar switching and indicator unit.

The reason is that the existing controller is an integrated part of the pedelec and torque sensor circuits which have to be completely bypassed to enable a fully acting throttle. The optional Panasonic throttle only works at walking speed and minimum power since it only bypasses the rotation sensor via a low level logic input. An additional problem is that in at least one of these units the circuits are totally hard encapsulated and sealed into the crankcase.

Sorry if this is a bit personal 3angle, but may I ask why the big hurry and the need to spend such a large a mount on an electric bike?

May I also ask what range you need?

There are several bikes or conversions like the eZee BMC MTB shown here eZee Conversion Kits - electric bikes and conversion kits that would do what you need for under £2000.

Looking forward to trying the new Forza , although I think for me I still prefer the models with hub gears.
I think your new range of bikes look really really strong contenders in the market place John, they seem to me to have far, far superior specification to the others.

As long as they dont turn out to be a lot more expensive than others ?

If not, then there would seem to be no real comparison, and Ezee will be Ezeely the winners :D

Lynda :)

(just a pity they dont come in Purple lol )

Hope you dont mind me saying....but that is a strange attitude to not even have time to try a bike before you part with anything up to £3+k !!!!

You know the saying " buy in haste, repent in leisure " I do hope that doesnt turn out to be true in your case.

The way I look at it is, if you dont have time to TRY some bikes .......are you sure you will have

time to actually RIDE one, when you finally get it ???

Lynda :)

Steady Lynda steady:eek:

Personally, I think the Sprint 8 with the Anne Rosat paintwork would be more suitable for a fashion icon like yourself:cool:

By the way, prices are on the website here electric bikes and conversion kits - Home;)

I cant see the xipi meeting the quality criteria, last ones discussed on here where built on a very average sub £400 bike. You do realise the are not legal for UK road use as motors well over 250 watt. what model are you talking about. I know David of wisper was talking about introducing a German bike it may be worth dropping him a PM as well.

Some of us here just love e bikes, have nothing to promote or sell

eRACE 2011 - KTM - YouTube

phone these guys and ask about a throttle

KTM ELECTRIC CYCLES - Redline Motorcycles

Bulls green mover: large range of bikes some with choice of 10 - 19Ah batteries.. powerful Go-Swiss drive motor (similar to Storke but 36v) more or less silent so you dont feel like your riding a moped...Not available here so support a bit risky. you would have to ask about a throttle

I have not tried one but have tried the storke with "similar" motor, very smooth bike (still prefer the Bosch though)

Thanks Eddie. That's starting to look more like it.
Will take a look at those.

Also saw these guys which I haven't before - pretty much KTMesque I'd say - Univega: Modelle 2012

Thanks all.

I would certainly second Steve.C's comments. Freego Eagles are great.

It has pure throttle or 3 stage pedelec control. With the 17 a/h battery I can ride 45 miles including climbing from sea level over the top of Beachy Head, across the South Downs Way, (chalk, mud, puddles, rocks and steep climbs), down to Alfriston and back home to Battle, and still have 2 lights out of four left on the battery guage, that's with continuous light pedalling. It's a heavy bike, but powerful and handles off road sections surprisingly well. Clearly it is not a full blown downhill racer, but it does me very well for general off road use.

What's more, as it is a legally compliant bike, you can stop off at the pub on the way home and slate your thirst on a few of England's finest ales, then enjoy a leisurely cruise home throttle only. What could be better?

Freego have a good name for customer service, and a proper dealer network,

Another bike I have ridden off road was the EMotion Xenion 650 with Bosch Crank Drive, and this was a really nice bike, and I think if I did a lot more off road riding that would be my choice, but it ain't got a throttle, its a bit harsh on the bum, and on the road it won't keep up with my Eagle.

Just my clearly biased opinion, but it is biased because my Eagle has been so damn good, proof of the pudding and all that!

I have a budget of up to £3.5k and want to buy a hard tail mountain electric bike.

My two main 'musts' are;
- It must have a throttle control (for many, many reasons)
- It must have a decent range - around 30 miles average everything

I woul dhave gone with the Haibike or KTM if they had a throttle control but sadly not.

It's going to be for relatively average off roading / trailing etc a couple of times a week.

The best (I think) I've found so far is Xipi but I'm not sure that the quality looks very good!

I would be very, very grateful for any other suggestions.
Hi 3angle

I'm afraid I really can't help by way of recommendation, (Eddieo & Blew it have given great options in different ways) but I have to apologise and say you have me at a loss with your qualification about a throttle control being essential.

Perhaps, if you wouldn't mind, you could enlighten us as to why that's the case. I don't do proper mountain biking although I own a couple of not inexpensive full-sussers but the connection between a hardtail MTB and throttle escapes me.

Moreover, what features does the Xipi model which interests you have which might put it in pole position, so to speak, in your research so far? I find this thread quite fascinating with some really strange recommendations given your specified requirements and I have no axe to grind with anyone here. Also, like Eddie, I have nothing to sell and I'm not going to recommend any mate's business.

I'm really looking forward to discovering what you finally decide on, given that large budget at your disposal. All the best with your search.

Regards,
Indalo
