Yes, it has to be since a three pin socket on the charger could not connect to the five pin plug in the battery. The only change is the number of pins on both and that's probably to help ensure only the right charger is used. The connector used depends on the e-bike manufacturer. As examples, eZee have always used XLR, Powacycle on the Salisbury/Windsor these NTC ones, Wisper have generally used the "kettle" type IEC connector, later in a rotated earth pin configuration.

Ahh, I see it now, it is an in-line socket that they have used, the other half of it is actually in the battery housing, tempted to remove plug myself.......but presumably to re-attach it would involve soldering, a bit to fiddly for me I think........Del.

Yes definitely a soldering job if a wire has parted, and a fiddly one on these sockets.

That's the one flecc, came up on your Maplins link, think what has happened, the cable grip is loose, and the plug has been removed from the battery by pulling on the cable itself, thus either detaching a wire, or bringing a wire into contact with outer casing and making it short......Del.

Yes, that's a common cause, also sometimes causing a wire break within the insulation where it enters the connector, due to the pulling and bending.

I'll see what Muckymits comes up with, and failing that have a look around here and see if I can get it sorted, there are a couple of shops here that repair laptops.....not the same thing I know, but might be worth asking.......Del

Might be a silly question, with it being a 5 pin plug.....but how many wires are actually used with this charging system ? 5 or less? is it as flecc said, they use this 5 pin plug so that you can't use another, incorrect charger ? not very good on electrics myself, just wondered if anyone knows.......Del.

Almost certainly only two will be used, but obviously the two that match the battery ones.

NiMh batteries use three connections and the odd very sophisticated setup like the Panasonic unit bikes use three in charging, but virtually all lithium batteries like yours use just the positive and negative connections.

How many wires are used? Find out by stripping down the plug and having a look . If only 2 wires are used , you have the option of changing both the plug and the socket for any suitable 2 pin plug and socket . It probably only needs to handle a couple of amps . Just make sure that the plug and socket are of the non reversible type , and that when plugged in, the positive of the charger is connected to the positive of the battery.

Neptune, output of charger is 2 amps, it is the soldering bit that beats me, however if as you say, there is an option to change both plug and socket, that might not be a problem......I shallwork on it.......Del.

I've found the socket but the charger is else where, I have 2 large boxes of chargers and cant reach them at the moment. The LiPo's do have 2 wires, the older Li on had 3 as there was a temp sender in the middle of the pack to shut the charger down if things went wrong.

Still looking for the forks!

Muckymits, thanks for that, don't want to remove plug to investigate, and not be able to get it back together again, at least if there are only two wires, it has to be one....or the other....... that is shorting.....Del.

Plug now sorted, was telling a chap at work about it, and he said he could do it, half an hour later it was done, two wires, on had become detached, all now re-soldered, and working fine, thanks to all for replies and advice,........Del.
