Power cutting out

I've got a Wisper bike which I've had for about 3 years now. It has been great until this week when it's just started cutting out on me. It doesn't seem to happen at any particular time (eg after going over a bump in the road) and has even done it when I've been coasting downhill (not pedalling). I read somewhere that the battery connectors can get a bit bent out of shape but all looks fine there.

I did notice a slight smell when I took the battery out tonight though (it cut out 3 times on the way home from work today) and it felt a bit warm.....but that's the problem - maybe it always felt a bit warm and I never noticed (but you'd think that in 3 years I might have done :)). I'm wondering if anyone could advise whether they think it could be the end of the road for the battery. A new battery is about £300 and it'd be awful to buy one and then realise that it's still doing it.

Some of the older Wispers had trouble with the fuse holders melting. It's difficult to comment further without knowing which bike and battery you have.
