Powertrike Xtra throttle broken

Hi all, Have had this trike for about 8 years - has been very good. Throttle now doesn`t work - power on = full throttle with only the left brake lever to cut out the power - not good! Any info on what to do about this. I guess I need a part that will plug in to the existing control box. The throttle itself looks like a Hall Sensor magnetic one - I`m not sure what the fault might be. Thanks for reading this. Paul - T4 Paraplegic.

I think the company is now defunct but these people have knowledge of your system, you can give them a call if you are UK based, they may be able to suggest a replacement throttle as yours seem to display the usual symptoms of a broken one:

I just called Team Hybrid and they said that the only option they offer for the PDQ Powertrike is a complete refit with their own system this is because the PDQ system is apparently one of a kind!! So this will cost around £1700 so I will now talk to Leonardo (davinci) in Liverpool and see what they say - the guy is back on Monday. They are the people who `look after` the PDQs now.

I'm assuming that your trike has a brushed motor. Can you confirm that? If a bike with a brushed motor goes immediately to full throttle when you switch it on, it's the mosfets in the controller that have blown, not a fault with the throttle. Brushed controllers are not very expensive - about £20 on Ebay.

The fault has now evolved - With The Power Trike Xtra you: 1) turn the key 2) flashing control box lights 3) depress left brake lever while turning the throttle to max 4) lights remain all lit. Yesterday I managed to use it by using the left brake lever as a cut out as the throttle was on full. Today I cannot get passed the flashing light stage so no going out for me today. I will try and find out if it is a brushed motor and post again. Cheers - Paul.

Follow the wire from the motor to the control box. Have a look at the connector. If there's two wires, it's single phase brushed. If there's three or more, it's 3-phase brushless.

If you can get a photo of the controller and its connections, we should be able to advise a replacement. It's probably written on it brushed or brushless (BLDC).

Here are a couple of images of the hub and the controller box. It has two wires. I cannot see any descriptive info on the machine. I`ve just added a couple more images - the ones of the throttle unit are a bit blurred!

That's a brudhless controller, but the actual controller is inside that black box. Can you open it?

I can try. So you think the problem might be the controller and not the throttle itself?

I opened it here is a photo and it says powertrike controller PM009-1 on the board.

That's a special one for your bike. You can replace it with a standard one, but you'd have to do a bit of wiring to join it up. That means putting new conectorsvon your battery, motor, throttle and brake cables. Alternatively, you could replace the blown mosfets.

So could I get a new control box and throttle and fix it to my trike? Do you have any suggestions for make/model for this? I was thinking that this would be a solution as well.

Does your trike have a pedal sensor?

I don`t think so - what is that? Where might it be? There is a socket on the control box which just has a kind of plug in it with a rubber bit like a pipette but with nothing connected. If I get a new control box does the specified wattage have to match the motor? I cannot see what wattage my motor is.

A pedal sensor makes your motor go when you pedal. If you don't have one, that makes it much easier.

I would gues that your controller is about 20 amps. How many volts is your battery and what type is it?

I`ve got 36 volts and it is lead acid.
