Hi...
I have on of the 8 gear Hub Pro Connects, it must be about 4 years old now and still going strong. At 3000 miles I replaced the whole chain set:
1) Chain Wheel, Motor Sprocket, Rear Sprocket and the Chain as they were worn.

Now at 6000 miles they need replacing again.
50 Cycles stock everything except the 41 tooth chain when - which is quite specific to the panasonic motor bikes.
I have phoned them and they said, that they have had some on order for 2 months but can't get stock.
When I asked about back ordering they guy said he was very busy and I should phone back later.

When I phoned back, he really could be arsed with my query.. .which is a shame because I have always found them helpful in the past and was considering a new bike from them in the near future.

Anyone know where I can source this part as my bike is useless without it !!

thanks

I seem to have only read good things about 50Cycles previously and I'm shocked to learn they cannot supply you with a replacement chain wheel for a Kalkhoff bike. Perhaps your posting may induce a response from the company as I know they do contribute to the forum fairly often.

ps I bet there are loads in ebike repair shops all over Germany, not that that's a lot of help to you though!

Some suggestions. First you could contact Kalkhoff direct from this English Language contact page to see if they can help.

If not, try this Kalkhoff agent in Paris, the proprietor is Sophie Nenner who speaks English. She may also be able to source through other makes which use the Panasonic units since she is an e-bike specialist. In particular, the Swiss BikeTec Flyer model S uses the 41 tooth chainwheel:

Vélo Electro SARL
50 rue Saint Georges
75009 Paris
France
Phone: 1 42 81 54 68
Fax: 01 42 81 54 68
Email: contact@velo-electro.com

You could contact BikeTec direct to see if they will supply, or recommend a dealer they supply through. Here is the English Language contact page for them.

Well, they have responded so do keep us appraised as to whether they can actually provide the part or not. It could be a lengthy saga if you are forced to look at sourcing the part from continental Europe although Flecc has provided one or two contacts, should you need to look elsewhere.

All the best,
Indalo

Hi TimeLord
One small note of caution. In the early days, all of the Agattus and Pro Connects had hub gears and used 1/8" wide chains. The 41T Panasonic chainwheels had wide teeth (3 mm) which suited 1/8" chains well. In fact, this chainwheel had the widest teeth in the chain circuit and was the primary reason for fitting an 1/8" chain.

Since then, many of the Panasonic powered bikes have been fitted with derailleur gears requiring narrower chain - sometimes 3/32" 8 speed, but more commonly even narrower 9/10 speed.

Chainwheels for these bikes are either 41T or 35T with narrow teeth (2mm).

The 9T motor sprocket, when used on derailleur bikes, has also been reduced in thickness from approx 2.2 mm to 2.0 mm. I am fairly sure that motor sprockets with more than 9T have always been 2.0 mm.

I would recommend that you don't purchase a new chain until you see what width of teeth are on the new 41T chainwheel - if it is 3mm, all well and good - stay with 1/8" chain.

If it is 2mm, I would recommend 3/32" for single gear / hub gear bikes.

Talk to 50cycles about which chainwheels they are able to get hold of. The wide stuff is less sporty and a tad heavier, but should last longer.

James

PS There is a marking which differentiates the two thicknesses - both chainwheels have a 5 spoke web. On the inside face of one web, the narrow tooth chainwheel has an embossed part number. The wide tooth chainwheel has no part number.

Did you get your 41T chain wheel from 50 cycles?

I have a used one here which came off Cyclezee's dud Panasonic motor. Teeth are a little worn but I guess it would keep you going while you wait for a new one.

Hi timelordUK

I'm curiuos as to why you are replacing your sprockets and chain so frequently. My Pro Connect is still using the original parts and has covered over 9000 miles. What sort of symptoms does your bike exhibit which leads you to change these parts?

The reason that I ask is because I am not an experienced cyclist or cycle owner and there may be something that I am not aware of. As far as I can tell, my bike runs quietly and smoothly on these 9000 mile + parts and I have no inclination to change them.

I hope you get your parts delivered quickly.
