I met an old friend today, and he ask me a question about electric bikes. He is thinking of building a quadricycle with pedal, and wondered if he could add electric assist legally. Does anyone know if this would be legal, and if so, what weight limit would apply?

The new regulations that are very soon being adopted, April I think, do allow these for the first time in the UK. Previously the EAPC regulations limited power to two or three wheels.

At the same time all pedelec weight limits are being removed, so he can go ahead for use very soon.

However, it has to be pedelec, no throttle, the power limit rating is 250 watts still and the assist speed has to be limited to 25 kph (15.5 mph).

If with a throttle it will become class L1e-A and must be type approved, bringing further restrictions but allowing 1000 watts.
