Raleigh Leicester E

Hilderthorpe Cycles are now selling the Raleigh Leicester E which appears to be identical to the Kalkhoff Agattu Wave.
Have just spoken to them and they currently just have one ex show bike available with a large frame.
More will be arriving soon, probably February. Price £1250 and the show model is available at a discount.
I'm not sure if they will be marketing the Kalkhoff Pro-Connect equivalent, the Raleigh Dover E.

Interesting John, they're developing a habit of bypass importing. They did the same with the full size Schwinn bike, despite the manufacturer recalling them and declaring them not fit for the market.

Caveat emptor, though it does appear to have official approval.

One unspecified thing worth checking is the battery capacity, the Agattu's is 10 Ah, but most others with this Panasonic unit use the 8 Ah or smaller.

The diamond frame Agattu is available from 50Cycles at £1195 though....
I know that Jimmy, I didn't say the Raleigh was cheaper, just available from a conventional cycle dealer. More choice and availability should lead to more electric bikes being sold.
My understanding is that 50cycles price is only until the end of this month, then they will be £96 more than the Raleigh.

Yes, the Raleigh could be a good buy for someone local to them if the battery is the 10 Ah and Hilderthorpe are able to give the manufacturer's warranty support.

Possibly not so good for anyone at a distance, since the collect and return that 50cycles have often arranged in cases of bike problems might not be available from that bike shop.

Ha! Barking up the wrong tree! Sorry, I can't say anymore however I will make sure this website is one of the 1st to find out the details when they are available.

Powabyke's are supplied via Raleigh dealers, however these Raleigh electric bikes are imported (I think) from Raleigh Germany. I think Raleigh UK are just testing the water with a top end electric bikes. I should know more after the weekend so will try and put more up on Monday.

the schwinn thing you are correct on Flecc as he assured me that all his buyers where totally happy, funny thing is i saw them on e-bay first, then went into the shop one day and happened to talk to a woman on the tills and mentioned i think i had seen them on e-bay, apart from useing the words NO NEVER !!! she said no, queitly and unconvincingly, then while talking to who i thought was shop owner having thios schwinn conversation she came over and spoke to him about an order that was from an e-bay buyer. ...ha ha ..have not been for a while so dont know if they still selling schwinn, was 3 months ago i spoke via a e-mail via e-bay...

They only have limited number of Schwinn models available and some of them are being discounted by 13%, so it looks as if they might be dropping them like hot potatoes.

I've just tracked down where I read the story about Raleigh UK intending to get into electric bikes in the future.

It was in AtoB November 2007 edition, based on a conversation that David Henshaw had had with Mark Gouldthorp, the managing director of Raleigh, at the Cycle Show. It implies that Raleigh UK is considering either adopting the German bikes or developing its own, while continuing with Powabyke at the 'low end'. I can't paste the quote but if anyone has the old issue it is on p5. It also predicts that a UK retailer will import these bikes in 2008, selling them for £1200!

David Henshaw was well informed!

I know why that was. David had acquired the Schwinn Continental for testing from Hilderthorpe at about that time, so would have had conversations with them then, Hiderthorpe probably disclosing their plans.

Yes Derrick, identical in all the main details, and possibly everything. Kalkhoff are a part of the Derby Cycles Group, and models produced by that group can be sold through various companies. Hence the German Raleigh company, Raleigh Gmbh selling them over there. Raleigh UK used to own the German Derby Group, but sold it a little while ago.

The direct import seems to be by the Yorkshire bike shop selling them here.

I'm trying to negotiate a lower price for a Leicester E than SRP €1799 with a german dealer, using the price of an Agattu (DKK 13.999 / €1866 / £1400) that I was quoted from the danish importer, who will bring it to market in March.

The german dealer claims that they are not the same, the Raleigh being better.

Which is better of the below?

Comparison: Raleigh/Kalkhoff

Saddle: City Webspring / Selle Bassano 5th Avenue Big
Headlight: B&M Lumotec Halogen, with switch / B&M LUMOTEC-2 senso plus
Rear light: Basta X-Ray Steady / B&M SELECTRA plus
Tyres: Schwalbe Road Cruiser Light, 42-622 / Continental CityRide, Reflex stripes and puncture proof
Rims: Exal zx19 (2007 spec, 2008 nameless)/ Rodi Freeway

Yes it certainly is rubbish Erik, they are the same bike.
.
Please see the differences thay I posted after your reply, Flecc.

The City Webspring saddle, which some also list for the Agattu, seems to be an OEM product not on the open market.
The Basta rear light is half the price of the B&M
The headlight could be half the price on the Raleigh

If there is a difference , then the Raleigh has the lower specs, not reflected in the identical price.

Sorry about the delay in replying Erik.

The only thing I can see on the Raleigh that might be better are the Exal ZX19 rims which are laterally very strong, ok for hydraulic brakes. However, I prefer the vertically deep section Freeway Holkhammer rims.

So I can see no justification for him claiming the Raleigh better, though to a rider they would be virtually the same in use in most areas of course.
