Ironic indeed. We don't know the circumstances of course, but I've gone on record as saying the Segway is a fundamentally unsafe vehicle* so an accident of this sort doesn't surprise me.

*Due to the degree of emergency braking depending too much on rider skill and in any case, seriously limited in comparison to a fore and aft wheeled vehicle.

Reading a couple of reports on this, it seems that the rough pathway at the top of the cliff (a 30' drop) is likely unstable and I woudn't be surprised if it's partially overgrown, hiding a cutaway drop to the river. Whatever the actual cause, I wouldn't have been riding a Segway there and it's led to the loss of a decent human being.
