Sentimental Journey.

I usually ride my ebike in the afternoon, and my pedal bike gets ten miles of use every morning for my daily exercise. Occasionally, I like to pedal along some less familiar roads, and today was such a day. I took the train to Lincoln, where i once lived for 20 years. I was hoping my 12 year old Grandson would come with me, but he cried off at the last minute. So I decided to go anyway, and jumped on the train with my bike and a day`s supply of food and drink. On arrival, I walked around the city centre for half an hour, before joining National Cycle route one, and heading South East.
The temperature was in the mid twenties, so once out of the city, it was out of the jeans and into the shorts. I stopped in Bardney, ten miles down the track for a break and a meal of sandwiches. The next three miles consist of farm roadways, and I was pleased of dry weather, as the surface is mainly soil. I was soon back on tarmac, on the cycle track. There were quite a few cyclists, and walkers about.
Near Coningsby, I heard a loud noise of an aircraft. It was an Avro Lancaster being flight tested, and it flew over at not more than 500 feet. A thrilling sight. By mid afternoon I was at Langrick, only 5 miles from home. I suddenly felt disappointed that my ride was almost over. So I took a diversion through the villages of Brothertoft, Hubberts Bridge, Kirton Holme,Kirton End, and finally Kirton, before returning to Boston. Had a beer, and a shower, and then it was time to eat. My muscles ache, I have a bit of sunburn, but what a brilliant day. Forty miles, my best ever daily mileage. No threat to Bradley Wiggins, but not bad for a man of 66 summers.

That was a very nice account of a terrific sounding cycle ride.
Thanks for posting it Neptune.
It has certainly made me long for a ride on my Raleigh Milk race special on a warm sunny day.
When you've built up a thirst there is nothing better than a well kept pint of real ale to savour and enjoy and reflect on the days ride!

Barry.

Pleased you liked that Barry. I was inspired to make the trip when I noticed that the nights are "pulling in" now. We do not live forever, so we all need to get out there while the sun still shines. I ride all year round, but summer has its own brand of magic. All too soon it will be back to school time for the kids. It is now 50 years since I left school, but I can still feel the pain of the end of the summer holidays. Get on that Raleigh and do some miles...

You are so right Neptune.....and I enjoyed reading about your lovely day out....sounds idyllic.

Meanwhile , I was just about to set out tomorrow in the m/home for 4 or 5 days cycling along the Kennet and Avon canal, but one of my dogs hasnt been too good today in the heat, so I will have to wait and see how he is and wait till it cools down.....after waiting all this time for good weather....talk about sods law, but hopefully will get away after the weekend :D

This is what it's all about. While I enjoy the technical side of ebiking the real joy comes from using our wheels for pleasure. The sheer delight of pottering along Cheshire lanes on a summer afternoon is a foretaste of what heaven might be like if it existed!
Yesterday we cycled past Heyes' Walled Gardens, exchanging salutations with dog walkers, youngsters on bikes (two of whom recognised our bikes) and courting pensioners. Home in time for The Archers and a glass of something beginning with 'w' ...

I was expecting to hardly be able to walk this morning, but actually got up early and felt good. I did 15 miles this morning, before the sun got too hot. Actually, Lincolnshire is one of cycling`s best kept secrets. If you are not all that keen on hills, the fens of South Lincolnshire are so flat that if you have never been here you will be amazed. The section of NC1 that I rode yesterday covers 33 miles, with a change in elevation of less than 5 metres. We have the biggest skies in the world, and the cloudscapes are an education in themselves. We have hundreds of miles of quiet country lanes with perhaps one car or tractor a day. You can ride 90 miles from Lincoln to Camridge without seeing a hill. If you like hills, there are the north Lincolnshire wolds. Come up and see us sometime. Soon.

I'd love to cycle 33 miles and only rise by 5 metres. Actually I'd like to cycle 100 metres and only rise/fall 5 metres. :)

Me too! Living up a 14% hill in a very hilly area, to be able to ride on the flat over a large area would be a luxury. In fact I'd probably never have switched to electric from normal bikes.

Jimod, I am so lazy I made a positive choice to only ride it in a downhill direction!
@Mountainsport. Regarding my choice of words, not a salesman or a novelist, but according to my mates, I am a bit of a bullshiner. Actually , I make a point to ride at least 10 miles everyday, including Christamas day, as always reckon if you take a day off, you have a ready made excuse to have the next day off as well. Then before you know it, you haven`t been on a bike for three months. As i said, everyone should try cycling in the fens, or in Holland,at least once.
I am surprised at the enthusiasm shown for the story of my little "Road Trip". But there is a lesson to be learned here. Every road trip is different, and interesting. It does not have to be a Coast-toCoast- or a JOGLE. Tell us about YOUR Road Trip. I have no reason to doubt that you love your area as much as I love mine. Share it with all of us.
Here is another little incident from yesterdays trip. As I road along the cycle path near Coningsby, I saw something glinting in the sun . I stopped for a closer look, and saw that it was a wristwatch. I picked it up, and sat down on a nearby bench, wondering what to do next. An old guy was approaching on an ancient sit-up-and-beg. He stopped, and the conversation went like this.
Old Guy."I don`t suppose you have seen a watch on your travels?"
Me."Is this yours?"
Old Guy. "Yes it is, thank you."
Me. "It looks valuable, is it gold?"
Old Guy. " I bloody hope so, or I was robbed of £2.99"
There`s no answer to that...
