I saw a bike with solid wheels for the first time this morning. Unfortunately it was passing by quickly on the other side and I only got a quick glimpse. My impression was that it was a classy standard road bike with an expensive appearance to it. Are these wheels carbon fibre or something similar? Have they any large advantage?

No large advantage Tony.

There's a tiny reduction in wind resistance due to spokes, so bikes using carbon fibre and similar disc wheels are used in competitive track events.

In the Tour de France, a few riders use them on the time trial stages when all out speed is needed, but the majority don't, so any advantage will be very marginal.

The major disadvantage is in strong cross winds, when a bike's slow speeds don't have the gyroscopic compensation for stability that fast motorcycles have for example.
