This is a sister thread to Morphix's camera shake thread.
Isolation of the audio would be an option and I suspect there are numerous audio cleaning tools that can be used. I have Adobe Audition which I use for my music vids.. I'll have a go at cleaning a noisey cycle video and publish the result ...
It would be good to have some examples of videos that has been recorded on the various cams with internal and external mics.

Good idea kitchenman, wind pick-up is always a major prob on my vids and also low voice pick up.. With most cams having internal mics there's little you can do except maybe make some wind shield cover over the mic..

My Vado HD has the external mic socket so I'm going to order a couple of external mics (stereo and mono lapel) this week to experiment with and I will report back..

ordering external mics

I just went to order some external mics today but one is out of stock. bah. Was going to get a lapel mic and a stereo one..

The stereo one is available and looks a bargain at only £3 + £2 shipping, but I can't see where this company is based, looks like could be in Asia or America..I'm waiting for a reply:

I don't think the stereo mic will be much use for external camera socket recording on ebike as it's intended to be used close to the camera..unless you used an extension lead..

I did notice these..

Singing Machine Dynamic Headset Microphone with Elastic Headband and 3.5m Lead A090AH

It has a windshield, but perhaps something more discrete might be better :)

Here is another:

Electrovision Black 1000 Ohm Earphone With Boom Microphone G180D

No windshield though, so might defeat the object.

QTX Sound Tie Clip Microphone 173.617UK

This is the type I originally planned to buy, but I saw this very same one cheaper elsewhere.. It has a windshield and is more discrete. Could be the best choice..

Quick DIY approach to wind-screening?

I'm wondering if it would make any difference to use a piece of foam over the internal mic on the camera? That type of dark grey foam used in packaging electronic goods perhaps? I'm sure I have some lying about somewhere I will have a look for it..

It might block the wind but it might also dampen the mic pick up of voice too much unless you have it really close to your mouth...be interesting to give it a try.

Alternatively there are sites I've seen selling proper windscreen covers for mics which can be had for a couple of quid.

I do not think there is much you can do about the wind noise.

The solution is to remove the sound altogether and put a music track over the top of it.

That's ok I guess but what if you want some ambient noise of the environment, or if you want to do vocal commentary? I guess you could record the vocal commentary later and drop it in.

If you want commentary on the road, record it and be damned with the noise - as long as you can make out what you are saying you can always redub it later.

I think your best bet is going to be a lapel mic, ideally worn under the clothes to keep it out of the wind. Tape it on to minimise movement (and therefore cloth scratching) and use foam or gauze over it too.

If you don't want to be attached to the bike/camera with a wire (because it is inconvenient) just record the audio to a separate device like an MP3 recorder, and add it to the video track later.

Yes, I've done that (check out my signature utube link if you haven't already! . - its a mixture of studio record vocals and on bike record vocals ...)

It would be good to find a solution where you can record the video and audio and simply publish it! .. and avoid too much pc related work! ... capturing the moment in video and audio, depending on the moment, could be special ... a david attenborough moment ...

People will do whatever suits them but if we can list all the options then they can choose.

I have also had this problem on the motorbike and another way I solved it was to stop at interesting places and record there.

When cycling I would imagine the noise is reduced if you have a back wind.

Or pick a quiet day as I did for my Youtube debut. The voice is a book on my GPS.

I am sure there are lots of tricks and I hope I learn some from this thread.

I've seen lots of videos on YouTube of motorcycle cams and they seem to have totally eliminated wind noise either by having the camera itself mounted in their crash helmet or by running an external mic into it.. the closed helmet is ideal for that..

Here is another example showing how by mounting a device on goggles can result in improved audio quality. In this case its my CARDVR torch style mounted with gaffer tape to the side arm of my goggles.
