took the bike out for a spin this morning and a loose spoke on the rear wheel which I had not spotted came adrift and lodged itself firmly into the hub brake rendering the bike totally immobile ... had to dump it in an industrial unit and walk home.

anyone else had this problem and will it cost a lot to put right ... I am now the proud owner of two busted bicycles, think I should have stayed in the canal....

Shouldn't be expensive. I guess your rear motor hub brake is a Shimano roller brake and they are very robust, so a matter of forcing the spoke back out from where it's jammed. You can probably replace the spoke yourself quite easily. Once you've got the old spoke out and unjammed the wheel, you can ride it back and let us know which side of the motor the spoke is.

If you can't force the broken spoke out, slip the motor wheel out a little, remove the spindle retaining nut that holds the brake in place and slide off the brake from the motor to release the spoke. Then reassemble and ride back.

P.S. You may even be able to avoid taking out the wheel. If you undo the left hand wheel nut about half an inch, then squeeze a spanner in between the frame and the hub brake to undo it's retaining nut on the spindle a little, that should release the brake from the motor enough to be able to extract the spoke.

Then do up the brake retaining nut and finally the wheel nut. Then after you ride home we can tackle the spoke replacement.

Yes. I had a spoke go once and then another and then another ... Get the whole wheel checked out.
