an internal gear hub with integrated motor, googling seems to come up with lots of variations on geared motors which i'm sure is not the same thing. just wondered if there was a kit that had motor and gears in one unit.

There's a motor with an integrated gear-hub. it's basically just a direct drive motor around a hub-gear unit, so a bit of a waste of time.
There's also the Xiongda 2-speed motor that can double it's internal reduction to produce double the torque for hill-climbing. I have one and it's brilliant. You still need gears for your pedalling, though their independent of the motor's two gears.

This is available from ebikes.ca and if I'm not mistaken, all their DD motors come with ferrofluid installed as standard now, so they can take more abuse than equivalent non FF cooled motors.
